it was raining when we were in Rio so we had to forget beach and look for culture - and it proved to be advantage as it allowed us to go to Niteroi and visit this museum. Just go there, its amazing. And make sure to visit the coffeeshop/restaurant - it will prove the impact of good architecture on good living

I can’t believe people recommend this museum online. This has been so awful. There are NO expositions at all. Only ONE. They charge only 10 reales for an entrance, but that’s not the point. To go to this museum from Rio (Ipanema or Copacabana) you need to take a ferry and an uber. It takes about an hour to arrive. When you get there, yes, the architecture, the building itself is very nice. But once you get inside, you can do the full museum in under 5 minutes! It’s a joke. There’s only lights off and various exposition floors with just a tv set showing I don’t know what. Terrible experience and they didn’t want to give our money back. Do not go.

Very impressive building. The view from the forecourt is nice. You have a different view from Rio. The Exhibits were, we can say, alternative. We like them. It is another point of view for modern art.

Oh my! Such an incredible piece of architecture and an abomination of a museum. The “art” was a joke. Don’t bother spending the time inside. Total waste!

The architecture is wonderful and the building definitely is worth a visit. Sadly, the art inside was very disappointing. We saw wonderful art in the government museums, so curating issues???

Great day excursion from Rio de Janeiro if you're an architecture enthusiast. We were staying in Ipanema which made the subway quite handy. We got off at Carioca station and walked eastwards through the city center towards the ferry terminal, which is just a 5 minutes walk; the ferry terminal is situated at the water side of the Praca XV square. The ferry ride offered beautiful views of Rio both and Niteroi. On the Niteroi side we took a cab to the MAC museum, which was only 12R$. The outerworldly looking museum is situated dramatically on top of a hill/cliff, offering photo opportunities from all sides. Inside the museum is spatially really interesting. Low versus high, enclosed versus open spaces does make it a spatially rich building. As many wrote already the collection itself wasn't as interesting as the architecture by 104 year old grandmaster Oscar Niemeyer.
Furthermore you'd wish only that the museum would be maintained properly. From closeby detailling (bubbly carpet..) is quite scruffy.
In the 'plateau' on which the museum rests is a bistro good for coffee or lunch.
Since the taxiride wasn't that long we decided to walk back to the ferry, which is a 30-45min walk and you'll even get to see another Niemeyer building, closer to the center of Niteroi, characteristic for Niemeyer it was immediately recognizable as a Niemeyer building without me having a clou which function it has.
Back in Rio we decided to take a cab to Ipanema cause the Centro area looked already quite desolate (saturday 4.30pm).
So, all in all, an excellent trip if you're into modern architecture & Oscar Niemeyer.

As others rewiews of the museum the design is the real attraction. The building seems a rose in the middle of water and the view of Guanabara bay is gorgeous. If you do not know the city of Niteroi, enjoy to see around and check the country side clima so close to Rio...
The collection of brazilian modern art was good but the exhibition does not help to feel and learn with it and conservation of inside museum is very poor. BUT It is a very reccomended visit!!!just by Niemeyers, the view of Rio's city or just to confirm that life offers amazing experiences !

This is a beautiful museum to look at. Shaped like a saucer and we found a rather scenic way to get there. A mixture of ferry and Uber.

There are great views that can be had from here.

As for the museum, what a disappointment. There is so much space to fill and what they filled it with showed a lack of imagination.
