The São Januário tour is second only to the Maracanã tour, which doesn't even have a guided tour. But the visit is quick, without many details, we didn't have access to the trophy room. Precarious stadium. I thought it would be interesting to have a school on site, it was a differentiator.

On our recent trip to Rio, we were keen to take in a football match.

We obtained our tickets through a contact at our hotel and transport was provided.

The journey to the stadium is an interesting one and many warned us about leaving phones and cash out of sight.

We visited the club shop first and took in a few drinks from one of the many street vendors. This makes for a really great atmosphere filled with music and smoke from all sorts of food being cooked.

Inside the stadium, everything was as expected - toilets were clean and accessible and beers were available at decent prices.

The game itself was very good and unfortunate for Vasco to come away with a defeat.

As someone who regularly travels to football grounds around England and Wales; the stadium had some lovely interesting features and one of the fascia of the ground is listed.

Despite the result, there was some decent atmosphere and all in all was an unforgettable experience.
If in the area, I'd recommend giving it a go.

There's a big room with trophies, and all the fans can take photos.
There's a restaurant, the food is good. But it's too hot inside the room.
The sidewalk outside it's terrible, it's broken.
And there's a store to buy everything of the club.

I like the visit.

Estádio São Januário, nicknamed A Colina (The Hill), is the home of CR Vasco da Gama. The stadium has a capacity of 24,584 seats.

São Januário opened on the 21st of April 1927 with a match between Vasco da Gama and Santos (5-3). The first goal was scored by Santos player Evangelista. When it opened, the stadium was the largest of South America, and even though it lost that status quickly, it remained the largest of Brazil until the opening of Pacaembu in 1940.

In the 1930s and 40s the stadium was a regular host to the Brazilian national team, and it was one of the two playing venues at the 1949 Copa América. After the completion of Maracanã in 1950, the stadium had to settle with just two international friendlies in the late 1980s and early 90s.

The facade of the main stand is listed as national heritage. In 2007 a statue of Romário was erected at the stadium. It is located on the pitch, behind the goal in which he scored his 1000th goal ever.

São Januário is a good old football stadium from the 1920's. Home of Vasco da Gama, the stadium still have its singularity that Maracanã stadium lost after the terrible and corrupted reconstruction. Try to attend a Vasco match and you'll feel back almost a 100 years ago. The location demands a bit of attention because of security but nothing much different than any other stadium.

I'm a Vasco fan, so no surprises on my feelings when in Sao Januario.
This stadium holds so much history and still keeps the architecture from the inauguration in 1927. The entrance is by far the most beautiful in a football stadium in this country.

Vasco games at Sao Januario are the best for atmosphere currently in Rio. Easily accessibly by metro to Triagem and the main stand has the most baeutiful facade of any sports arena.

Sao Januário is a must-see experience for football lovers worldwide. The stadium is older, and located within a favela, but the sizeable security and police presence should dissuade any concerns you may have.

Washrooms are easily accessible, but alcohol (illegal in most Brazilian stadiums) is only available in the delegate's (VIP) area located across the pitch from the visitor section.

The energy of the crowd is electric, and as long as you're supporting Vasco you'll be treated like a carioca for the day!

A great experience.
Went With a tour group cost about £35 collected at hotel and left back there.
Match ticket ( basic) included.
Very very safe and it was a local Derby Vasco v Botafogo.
Could move around the ground no problem.
Alcohol freely available inside the ground no abuses.
Police on the ground made you feel secure.
Don't miss an experience like this if ever in Rio.
Memorable.!!
