A step towards Brazilian colonial era

A quiet place, full of history and the ability to transport you to the begenning of 19th century. I truly recomend it!

A hidden gem in Rio de Janeiro this beautiful library was founded in 1837 by a group of Portuguese immigrants who were also political refugies, having its mother rock set by the Emperor D. Pedro II. If you are not yet convinced, in July of 2014 Time Magazine elected it as the fourth most beautiful library in the world. Just... More

Currently under rennovation... You can peek in and it is beautiful, well worth the detour. 3 floors of antique books with a stained glass ceiling on top.

The Royal Portuguese Reading Room is a cathedral of books and a hidden treasure in Rio Centro. Built in the 19th Century and designed by the Famous architect Rafael da Silva e Castro, the impressive multistory library is undergoing extensive restoration and sadly was partially hidden under plastic tarps and scaffolding during our recent visit. Normally open for free to... More

This is a nice place to visit. Go there as part of a larger tour as it is small and can be seen and photographed in about 20 minutes. There many other tourist atractions nearby, mostly old churches, squares and cafes. Call in advance to see if it is open.

Old fashion but beautiful. You got to walk in and take a look while at this library while strolling around in downtown Rio. A must see something that was lost in the past and won't be found equal other than in Portugal.

This building, that in the outside des not look so atractive, is, inside, one of the most beautiful places you can visit in Rio. You will get surprised! And, what is good, you can take pictures!

Not able to see anything and had to walk quite a long time to go there as there was no indication on their site that they were renovating the place

Totally unknown to the " cariocas " - the inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro, this typically portuguese buiding stands in Rio´s old " Centro ". It contains inumerous ancient documents and books of the portuguese Colonial Rule and further on. The interior has been fully mantained as it was. Free admission. An absolute must.

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.
