Dragged here by my wife to see the venious fly trap. She thought the plants would be chasing the flys, she didn't realise you had to wait for hours and get lucky to see any action. We walked around the site for 30 minutes and that was 20 minutes too long.

This is one of the top attractions of Rio de Janeiro. It was founded in 1808, when the Portuguese fled to Brazil to escape from the Napoleon invasion of the Iberian Peninsula. It is a botanical garden from the pre-industrial era. Today, one cannot find 100 acres of free space in a metropolis. At the front and in the middle,... More

The gardens don't pull the crowds that Sugarloaf and Christmas the Redeemer do, but that's a good thing. The grounds are large and varied with many interesting spots to stop and enjoy the plants. There's a small gift shop and several interactive centers.

Maybe it was because of the rainy day, but I wasn't too impressed. Maybe my expectations were too high, that's possible too. Sure it's a very beautiful garden where you can spend hours walking around, but it's also nothing more than that. I was expecting more of a jungle feel, but it was basically a very well maintained park with... More

This is an enormous botanical garden set in the heart of Rio, close to Ipanema Beach. I particularly enjoyed this garden because it featured a plethora of local flora, including an enormous collection of orchids. Most of the garden is wheelchair accessible/

It's possible that this place might be more beautiful in spring, but in March, it is more like a park. Mostly trees. There were a few things blooming. I was expecting more. If I knew what I know now, I would have done something else instead of spending the morning here.

We visited the Botanical Gardens on a weekend where the temperatures in Rio were topping 35 degrees, so it was a pleasure to wander through the leafy areas. we were lucky to spot marmosets and the odd toucan, as well as lots of other more common birds. The small lake and the avenue of palms were a particular pleasure, though... More
