It was difficult to discover this monastery. The directions are scarce and we had to ask a lot to get there. But we succeeded, and discovered a simple, quiet place that invites meditation and recollection.

As part of our tour we had a very insightful tour into this very ornate gilded church built in baroque style but finished in rococo period as I understood. The gilding over the very hard Brazilian timbers is very impressive. Still a working Abbey with...More

This is well worth the visit. The monastery had few visitors when we were there but is a beautiful space. Not totally obvious to find: you gain access via a lift in a modern building... ask if unsure.

My tour group (the wonderful Carioca Tropical all-day tour) stopped here to look at the extremely ornate, gilded interior. It is very very fancy and worth taking a look at, despite the somewhat unassuming exterior.

Gorgeous, over the top, beautiful! What a waste of money to build, while people are starving and living in shanty town and on the streets.
