Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

This church is tall and majestic. Inside there are spectacular stain glass windows that go floor to ceiling. There was music playing when we entered that gave an incredible atmosphere. Be sure not to miss, outside the cathedral, two amazing statues: one of Mother Teresa and one of the sleeping Jesus the homeless. Powerful and moving.

I was staying across the road at the Ibis Rio de Janiero Centro and decided to wander around this impressive looking cathedral one Sunday morning. The structure is very impressive especially at night when it's lit up!

This is an interesting cathedral, quite different from the typical churches seen around! Solemn and with beautiful stained glass windows, don't miss it if you are walking around the area.

The Presbyterian Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro is a historic congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Brasil, and was the first Presbyterian church in the country. Less ornate than its Catholic counterpart, but still architecturally ornate from pews to pulpit the Cathedral warrants a look if one is nearby but does not warrant a side trip for any but the devout.

Nothing particularly interesting inside... no need to stop here... better visit the Portuguese library next to it.

The exterior is very nice. In the garden in front of the church there are several statues and a small play area for kids. The garden is also very well kept. The church itself is very modest - the interior is all white but the stained glass windows are quite nice.

This church was built in the last century and was the first Presbiterian Catedral in Brazil. It is in a wonderful gothic style. The only problem is its location. It is not easy to find out how to get there. To whom are in BNDES builing the church is located just behind. To whom are in the Ibis Center Rio Hotel, this church is very nearby.

My spouse, baby and I attended the Sunday service last week at 10:15am. The people were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. They tried their hardest to find someone who could translate the sermon to us in English that would not be occupied in other things. Just before the sermon began, an English teacher sat down next to us and translated the sermon. Those nearby and even far from our seats welcomed us and made us feel at home. The church was also very beautiful. We're not used to seeing such beautiful Presbyterian churches back home in the U.S. If we come back to Rio for a weekend, this will be a must stop.
