Haven't cried while watching a sunset at a beach in a long time. Gotta appreciate and applaud that! Go early. Stay late. Get a good spot to see the sunset up on the rock. After, stay at the beach and enjoy the locals and the music and the food. Don't buy into the hype of the unsafetyness. (sp??). It's all... More

There is something quite uniquely special about this place at any time and what ever the weather, but being there at the end of a cloudless day and observing the spectacular show that nature puts on at sunset is a magical experience. I will never forget the first time that I witnessed the crowds on the rocks burst into applause... More

On my very first evening in Rio I strolled down to the rocks at Aproador - a famed sunset viewing spot. I enjoyed watching the aves crash against the rocks on two sides - copacabana beach side and ipanema beach side as aproador rocks sit between the two. I also enjoyed people watching (it being my first day). The sunset... More

A must visit at sunset, where you'll join hundreds of others to watch the sun disappear below the horizon. If you forget to pick up a sundowner from the beach, you'll find plenty of vendors up there!

Arpoador is one of the the best spots to watch the sunset in Rio. Go to the Arpoador rocks and join cariocas and tourists applauding the King Sun. To enjoy the beach, though, I prefer early in the morning. In the afternoon, be more watchful than usual. Unfortunately many young violent pickpockets walk in groups to steal small objects like... This is the promontory at the end of Ipanema which is noted for its viewing platform for sunsets. There weren't any great sunsets when we were there - too cloudy - but great views down the beach during the day - best in the morning to have the light behind you

Staying in Ipanema

Neighbourhood Profile
Ipanema
Ipanema is considered Rio's crown jewel. It offers the best view of the sunset from Arpoador and is inspiration for the legendary song, “The Girl from Ipanema.” Ipanema is an upscale area, home to many high-end restaurants and luxury shops, many of which can be found on the charming Garcia d'Ávila Avenue. The neighbourhood is very rich culturally, housing many art galleries that show contemporary art. There is also a great variety of nightlife in the neighbourhood, which buzzes with many options for every taste.
