About
Avenida Atlantica, with the iconic wavy sidewalk mosaic of Roberto Burle Marx, is ideal for strolling along Copacabana Beach. It is lined with beachside kiosks offering refreshments such as a chilled coconut, and at the far end is a quaint area where fishermen bring their fresh catch ashore.

The area
Neighbourhood: Copacabana
The rowdy Copacabana is one of the most traditional and old areas from Rio de Janeiro. This neighbourhood is a blend of Brazilian soul - crowded, rowdy and traditional. This neighbourhood has a bit of everything: bars with music, pubs, street fairs, chaotic streets, and many shops. All these things and more live side-by-side. There are options for all price points and tastes. However, the most powerful draw in Copacabana is still the fantastic view of the coast and the incredible beaches.

The avenue is lined with restaurants and shops. It is directly across from Copacabana beach. It was suggested that you don’t walk here too early in the morning or too late at night. It’s fine in the day when there are lots of people.

I'm a seasoned traveler to Brazil and this was my 16th trip. I speak Portuguese and know my way around. I always liked Copacabana with all the hustle and bustle and the beach is good...though Ipanema is better. But be careful. We've all heard about crime in Brazil, I thought that I had street smarts but I stayed too late at the beach and it was sunset. I dashed across Av. Atlantica and it was already shadowy under the trees along the inland sidewalk. Two guys came up to me and in a split second had my watch off and my cash out of my pockets....as they held a knife to my throat!
The good thing was they got a cheap watch and only about $11 (and I'm alive).
But it happened so fast that the seriousness didn't hit me for about 10 minutes. Then I was a nervous wreck. None of my Porto Alegre Brazilian friends ever go to Rio. Until the authorities do something about the violence I won't return either.

They close half of the street giving everyone 3 extra lanes of biking, skating, rollerblading, and great people watching. Watch the Tapioca vendors mix up a treat, the paid bathrooms are very clean, and for the best view of Copa, have lunch at the Sky Bar on the 30th floor of the the Rio Othlon Hotel.

The street/avenue is lined with hotels and restaurants that are priced for tourists! Stick to the beach bars or places away from this strip. It is however, a great walk. Along the beachfront, people watching (many locals running and playing sport). It is quite easy to get a sense of Rio from this strip. It is very clean and pleasant to walk.
You will encounter many street sellers but they are not too bothersome, The little markets dotted around are lovely to visit, but again, priced at tourist-levels, you will find cheaper elsewhere in the backstreets! If you're staying in Rio you will no doubt touch on this tree if you are heading for the beach - enjoy!

Avenida Atlântica, or Calçadão, is a very pleasant place to stroll along in a nice walk at your will. It has around 5 km/3 mi, long on the sea front. There is a variety of beach bars and a lot of people selling all sorts of souvenirs (however, they are quite polite). If you enjoy walking, then, in the end you can continue to walk along Ipanema and Leblon beachs.

During the night you can walk while you enjoy a cold beer, in Rio it is allowed to do that. You will even see the military police dressed in a very relaxed way.

Pedestrian walkway and road thay cocers whole bay of Coacabana beach. You will see some of the most incredibly toned bodies walking by in skimpy clothing !! Pk there are some wrinklies too ! Lots of each chironguitoa for drinks and food- snacks and main meals. Street vendors who are not at all aggressive in selling. The most perfect beach too !

Second only to Ipanema haha let me ct to the chase...the worlds most beautiful tanned sculptured bodies passing you by wearing nothing but dental floss coupled by a hive of activity of beach goers and fitness junkies riding their bikes, roller blading or jogging along the promenade.

The name is "COPACABANA BEACH" one of the must famous beaches in the world. Why? There is 24/7 people around, during the day to be on the beach and enjoy the ocean, the cold beers and the people around you. After the sun is down people are jogging, playing football, volleybal, foot volley and other sports every were. Professionals and beginners. Its a nice to see the people doing there workouts, and for sure you want to participate! During the evening there is the nightlife with all kind of entertainment in the Copacabana neighborhood. Many restaurants, for each budget. Walk the 5 km long beach during the day and during the night, you will see the difference. Famous hotels like the Copacabana Palace, Marriott, Sofitel, Rio Othen and the Hilton.
You can visit the restaurants of the hotels, they are not so expensive as you might think! They have good offers.
During the day they are looking nice and during the night even better and romantic.
There is a lot of things to do and to see...... bars , restaurants, locals who try to sell all kind of stuff and ...... people/ Take a seat at one of the kiosks ( Skol near post 4 is the best with always live music!) and look and forget life for a while, enjoy.
Is it safe, is a question the ask me all the time, special after the bad publicity about the favelas (why the news is more interested in bad then in good news?) I can say Yes, its safe but everywhere in the world where is a lot of people (tourists) there are other people looking to for your expensive belongings - keep them in the hotel safe - and take extra attention on your cel phone.
