Housed in a stunning example of eclectic industrial architecture, the Mercado Municipal de São Paulo — nicknamed the Mercadão — has thousands of food items on offer, literally from soup to nuts. Lush tropical and temperate fruits from every season, choice cuts of meats and fish, and hearty prepared foods, such as the renowned and enormous mortadella (bologna) sandwich, complete the market's catalog of wares, all for sale in a boisterous, welcoming atmosphere. The surrounding area can be a bit sketchy, but the sights and flavors more than make up for the journey downtown.

If you have more than 3 days in town, you must visit downtown Sao Paulo and once there, the Market. Go there for a Lunch and be prepared to get a lot of food and fruits. Ask the vendors to try everything you want and reserve some (lot of) space to the "famous Mortadela Sandwich. Bet days of the week... More

The Sao Paulo Municipal Market is beautiful in its architecture, in the engineering behind its metal structures, in all the flavours you smell, in all the colors that you see in food from the whole world that is offered, and in the people who works there. Besides, you should try the typical pastel", which you will find in several restaurants... More

Place to shop and eat. Fantastic restaurants on the top and lots of frills and etc down. Do not waste time tasting the fruits, they will push you to buy a lot.

This place is definitely a must visit for first time visitors to São Paulo. You'll get a taste of where and what the locals get their food. I have to warn though. The mortadella sandwich is massive, and it's very delicious!

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
To truly know São Paulo, you have to start at the old centre, full of history and landmarks with stories to tell. Get a taste of local food at the Municipal Market, and if you are brave enough, head to the crowded shopping street “25 de março” for cheap deals on a wide assortment of items. Beautiful buildings in this area include the Post Office Building, Luz Station, Pagé Gallery, Pateo do Colegio and the iconic “Viaduto do Chá”. If you find yourself amazed by the local language, the Museum of Portuguese Language is the place to go. Cultural centres, like Banco do Brasil’s, also offer a variety of entertainment options. Finally, if you fancy watching a Gregorian mass with organ music, stop by São Bento Monastery on a Sunday morning.
