The area
Neighbourhood:
Sé, which derives its name from Sé Square, is a central neighbourhood in historic São Paulo. Close by, the Law School, the Museum of the Court of Justice and the Metropolitan Cathedral offer inspiring architecture. If you are looking for cultural activities, head to Caixa Cultural and check the schedule. In the area there is a popular pedestrian street called “Rua Direita”, one of the first streets in the region, which today marks the crowded perimeter. Sé is a great area to explore during daytime, but use caution if visiting alone at night.

Hasn’t changed much over the years. First came here in 1986. More hopeless people and other beggars. Small groups of thieves are vigilant for opportunities to steal from visitors. Nice greenery and interesting to walk through.

Nice park with huge trees and even a small lake. Lots of police and we felt very safe and a very charming weekend market of arts and crafts.

It is well worth visiting this square on Sundays as arts and crafts are on sale. The space devoted to the market has been reduced and strolling at your leasure is less attractive!

The park itself has great potential with stunning trees and a lovely little artificial pond and fountain. However there are homeless people everywhere and no police to be seen when we were there, which naturally made it feel unsafe.

In the heart of Sao Paulo, Praca da Republica is always busy! You can relax in the gardens, grab a bite at the food stands or buy souvenirs at the arts and crafts market. It's also the gateway to interesting streets and sights, the Italia building for the rooftop view, rua Itapetininga for shopping, the Arouche square flower market. But it's at night that the area becomes extremely lively with the bars in the side streets, especially on Vieira de Caevalho and its dozen of gay bars!

You´re almost certain to pass this place as a tourist but whether you´ll want to spend much time there is another matter for the simple reason that it is always packed with drug addicts, beggars, street children, prostitutes and the like. There are plenty of police around so you will be safe but, as they do nothing to get rid of these people, the square is not a place to relax in.

This is a pity because it is a pleasant place with lots of greenery, which attracts parakeets and other birds, statues – including bizarrely, one of Baden Powell, the founder of the Boy Scout movement - and a little brook and pond which contains turtles and fish. It is also right in the heart of the city surrounded by French and Italian-style buildings from the early 20th century that are so refreshing after the steel and glass monstrosities in much of the rest of the city.

Craft fairs and markets are held on a regular basis and are worth visiting although don´t expect many bargains.

It is easy to get there by bus or metro and the bus station to Guarulhos international airport is next to the square. There are loads of places to eat and drink and lots of cheap and medium-priced hotels nearby. However, avoid wandering around at night.

I was there during a day, there was a market and some food stalls, few older buidings. It would be good for tourists, but there is also a park, where were a lot of both male and female (sometimes indistinguishable) "streetworkers" and some accompanying persons that I was a little worried - not only about my wallet.

One of the main squares in São Paulo, surrounded by commerce and some residential apartments, close to important places like Teatro Municipal (City Theatre), Av São João and with loads of public transportation. Is a nice point to start a visit to downtown. Relative safe by daylight, not recommended at night.
