The mausoleum and chapel of St. George the Victorious, opened officially and consecrated in 1907 commemorates the Orthodox soldiers who died during the Russo-Turkish Liberation War 1877-78. Such a noble landmark which over the recent years has been affected by mould and rust.

Such an interesting building on Freedom Square. Very colorful. Would liked to have viewed the inside but did not have the opportunity.

Beautiful chapel at the rim of a big square. Surrounded by stone walls with cannons positioned on top. Unfortunately, the gates were locked so there was no possibility to enter the premises and have the opportunity to look around inside the building.

The building is in a lovely park like area with water fountains. The Mausoleum sits in an area where dads chaperone their children whilst they motor around in small electric cars which they've hired from a kiosk. Unfortunately we couldn't find our way inside the Mausoleum but we enjoyed walking around the park.

Chapel-mausoleum ‘St. Georgi Pobedonosets’ was built in the period 1903-1907 in memory of the Russian and Romanian warriors killed in the fighting around Pleven during the Russo-Turkish War 1877/1878.

St. George the Victorious (also called the Conqueror) Chapel/Mausoleum is a Bulgarian Orthodox chapel completed in 1907 and dedicated to the fallen soldiers who gave their lives during the battle of Plevna, an important event in the War of Liberation for Bulgaria. It is located on Pleven's main square, Vazrazhdane square. It has an attractive and mixed architectural style, with red and white brick work and a clearly eastern European structure. The Mausoleum contains remains from Russian and Romanian soldiers. The Chapel also houses a number of icons created by Bulgarian artists

It's probably worth going inside, but appeared to be closed when we were there. I wouldn't make a special visit to see it, but it's right on the central square so worth a look even if you don't go inside.

This was an interesting stop. The chapel is quite beautiful and well maintained. The interesting contrast is the fence surrounding the chapel is decorated with canons and canon balls. It is a commemoration of past struggles against the Ottoman Empire.

A grand monument commemorating Russia's victory in one of the decisives battles of the 1877-1878 war. Both the outside and inside are designed in the style of an Eastern Orthodox church.
The basement contains a crypt with fallen soldiers' remains.
It is ridiculous that it is closed on Sundays - when else could be more convenient for people to visit?
