A quiet and peaceful town with colorful houses and clean pastures. It satisfies all my fantasies about small towns. There, you can go out to sea to see penguins, go hiking in the national park, and sunbathe with water birds by the lake. Start your day slowly and you will find some unusual and lovely corners. Don't miss the fresh seafood and wool products of Dalcahue.

I am Chilean and I have enjoyed many parts of my beautiful country but I was very disappointed with Chiloe, I took the Castro- Dalcahue tour from our hotel in Puerto Varas and I did not like it at all. It is really far to get there just to see a few palafito structures that look way nicer in pictures and the place is very tiny, we took a boat tour to see the buildings from the distance and that was nice because it was a hot day but there is not much to do there. If you are really curious about the place go there and see it with your own eyes, perhaps you will like it.

Chiloe has a sense of magic that is quite unmatched throughout the rest of the country. Gorgeous scenery, amazing food, kind people. I absolutely loved my time here and I would recommend to any type of traveller. Castro is gorgeous!

For me this place was definitely a highlight of Chile and even South America! Not for people looking for big city bustle of course but the peace and special culture is outstanding and well worth some time if you're heading south

First of all, the island is country-side beautiful but nothing special compared to Patagonia. The route 5 crosses the whole island and is NOT, I repeat, NOT for bicycling. We ended up taking this, coming from Patagonia and regretted it immediately. There is no other way to bike it than route 5, although you can try to take some really hard ripio-sections but it will be extremely slow (we took one, with the average speed of 2,5km/h with bikes).

No idea about the parks or sights or how the overall feel of the island would be with car. But not for biking.

P.S: They may advertise that whales be there starting from December but when asked, everyone said that maybe in February. So no whales either.

The island is quite different to the mainland. The scenery is varied and the pace of things seems to be a bit slower. There are some fantastic looking beaches and the surf was amazing.

We traveled here from Puerto Montt by car and found it Very easy to get to and only 40 minutes to the port where you cross (with your vehicle) on a ferry to the small town Chacao on Chiloè. Ferry costs 12000 pesos and they runs every 10 minutes. (Multiple ferries) We went to Castro which is the largest town on the island. They have homes elevated by wooden poles in the ocean but twice a day the tide goes out so much that sea bed is exposed over a large stretch that the poles are exposed and they are painted different colours. If you are on the island you need to go to Castro. The drive is beautiful with all untouched nature around you. Fill up on gas before you leave as there are not many gas stations on the way. Glad we took the day trip.

Just as Patagonia has the rightful tag as a geological "end of the world" location, the island of Chiloe can be thought of as a cultural equivalent. Reminiscent of Iceland, but without the veneer of modern Europe. Just quiet rolling farmland, old churches dominating townscapes, and inaccessible parks protecting unique biospheres.

The place seems like it comes out of a movie. And just as Paris or San Francisco are sometimes described as best experienced by just "being in a neighborhood for a day" the whole island is slowly absorbed, rather than sight-seen, until we felt we were lucky to have found it.

Each town, and each sector, has something to offer. You can't do it all, and neither can you go wrong when you pick a few towns and sights.

My 4 days on Chiloe Isalnd were much too short, there is so much to experience there. UNESCO WHS Churches, Agrotourism, great food and of course spectacular scenery and nature. And everybody makes you feel at home

Magic place. It was a great week of discovery in a place still untouched. A great choice and much better than Puerto Montt area
