They might not be as well preserved as the Mogao Caves due to their geological conditions, but they are impressive and of more communal, lived in character. Unfortunately only one statue from the Northern Zhou period is left (which is very rare!), even if the caves were not discovered by Western collectors.
When you visit, a local guide opens the caves for 3 people max. at the time and guides you, explaining intricate details that are unique to the caves (e.g. the Republican era face paintings, Tibetan and Uighur styles etc.). Not sure if they have English guides, however, but even if you don’t speak Chinese they’re still worth a visit for people interested in history.

We had visited the Mogao caves the day before. We visited here as part of a day tour. Some of the paintings in the caves were really beautiful and they are really ancient and original. However, the tour felt quite rushed. We went in 4 caves and were finished in 20 minutes. After introducing the caves, the guide moved to the next one very quickly. I would have liked to have more time to look around, but had to follow the group.

I been many times to Dunhuang mego Grottoes, it is too touristic for me, but the cave about 100km south of Dunhuang which named Yuling Caves are much more interesting, you can really closely enjoy the painting of thousand years old...
what i want let you know is this pictures is Yuling caves...no ideas why its named Xiqian.

Incredible part of the Silk Road--my experience, however was a tad different. These are magnificent caves with incredible wall paintings--and the Buddha's are mind-boggling. You enter through a large door into an absolutely huge room and an enormous awesome Buddha (each one is different). There is an ante-room, and then the cave. The floor between the two has a raised curb "to prevent even spirits from traveling from one room to another." I was behind the huge Buddha almost overcome with awe--and I suddenly realized my group had exited the cave and I was there alone. It was closing, they began closing the door and I began toward it--but in just a moment it was pitch black--and all I could think of was that curb between rooms--how would I ever know where it was? I was calling out "wait for me!" "I'm still here." Outside, I heard someone say "Is everyone out." I heard my husband's voice respond "Yes, everyone's out." Someone said "Somebody's in there." Again, my husband said "No. Everyone's out." Finally, they all heard--re-opened the door as I ran out in a small panic that has provided many laughs from that date (1996) to this. We LOVED it. You will too. -- Elizabeth Rann Arrott

Xiqian Buddha (西千佛洞)is a smaller scale to Mogao (莫高窟). Less crowd as a result but nonetheless interesting especially if you get a good guide. Please remember to use your ears not your hands as photography is NOT allowed inside the caves as flashlight will spoil the wall paintings!

They weren't quite in the same league as the Mogao caves but all much earlier, so the cave drawings were very indian in style. The caves are all quite small but still amazing that they were drawn over 1000 years ago and some of the colours still look really fresh. Not many visitors here so we were the only 2 people looking but the man hung around outside to make sure no photos :)

These tombs are nice, but nowhere near as impressive as Mogao Caves or Yulin Caves. Visit these if you are a completionist.
If you keep walking past the ticket office you will come to an attractive bend in the Dua River surrounded by cliffs. This is definitely worth visiting.
You will have to wait for a tour group to fill and a gap to visit the caves - access is controlled. Try to get an English guide, a lot more will be added. No photos allowed inside the caves.

It's on your way to visiting Yadang geological park: so, why not? It's quiet and not many visitors. And this, I must say, is a big plus. But the downside is that the guides don't really expect you to show up. They will give you a guided tour but the quality of the service is nothing comparable to wat you can get at Mogao Caves.
So, I left the place with mixed feelings. I quite enjoyed seeing the caves in a slower pace and in a quiet environment. But then its management is way below the expected standard. Still, if you want to take a break in midst of your journey to Yadang and Yumen, visit this place.

A small number of caves are open but if you have a guide ( excellent English spoken for us) you will have a great experience as they art work is slightly different from the Modgao caves, even earlier and a good contrast. It is a lovely settling too but a good guide is essential.Best to arrange through the centre at Mogao.
