We were strongly recommended to attend this by our tour guide (who we rather unfairly suspected of getting a commission, but actually got us a large discount).
It's easily the most spectacular show in the world. It's outdoors and can be quite chilly, but don't be deterred.
There are four separate outdoor stages and the whole auditorium rotates to face each in turn - quite a surprise the first time it happens.
It's a usual sort of star-crossed lovers but the spectacle makes the story not very necessary.

Dunhuang offers several shows that are all quite good according to people who have watched every one of them, but the only show that we saw was “Seeing Dunhuang Again” (You Jian Dunhuang), which was creative by a female director whose talents are comparable to those of Zhang Yimou – the famed film director who also directed the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Depending on how fluent your Chinese is and how much you know about Chinese history, what you enjoy most from show will differ. If you cannot follow what the actors are saying in Chinese, you enjoy primarily the dances and the beautiful images projected on the screens. For Chinese language speakers familiar with the relevant historical background, the performances can give them a deeper artistic and emotional experience. When I was in this immersive show with actors walking around and performing, I noticed that many in the audience had tears rolling down their cheeks.

“You Jian Dunhuang” is a theatrical production in Dunhuang. The English translation is “Seeing Dunhuang Again”. It is a show that involves standing for about 45 minutes and moving from one theater to another throughout the show. Production value and quality is excellent on a par with Broadway productions. The last performance is seated in a large theater and is spectacular with use of video projection, moving stages, and magnificent costumes.

I recommend that non-Mandarin speakers attend with someone who can translate the show because it delves into the history of Dunhuang and the Mogao Grottoes.

If you attend without language assistance, you’ll not be able to grasp the story and the history that is being replayed before your eyes.

We watched the Encore Dunhuang《又见敦煌》choreograph by the famous Wang Chaoge after visiting the Mogao Caves. These two locations are near each other and can be achieved in 1 full day. The theatre was an grand glass building that looked like a wave or pyramid structure. Good to go about 20 mins earlier cos your bags need to be deposited at another building.

It was a very dramatic and artful portrayal of the historical content in Dun Huang. Expect to be moving from hall to hall and there were action from various angles. Also expect to be standing for at least 30-45 mins. Love the use of sand to thread the whole historical background together. The way each story was portrayed was dramatic and it was an interesting way to learn real life happenings in Dunhuang, an important segment of the Silk Road.

What could have made it a little better is a short write up on the characters and which time period it happened. After the show, those information can help interested people to do a little more research to know the details of the character. Reading up about some key characters will also enhance the whole experience.

The TripAdvisor maplocation is wrong! I've reported it, but it is hard to change. The theatre is very close to the piper statue. Go 100 metres west down Yangguan Zhonglu. The theatre is on the south side of the road.

The show itself is amazing, definitely worth seeing. Impressive sets and colours. Everyone takes photos inside - they allowed with no flash. I have seen Beijing's Kung Fu and Acrobatic shows, and Xian's dumpling show. Dunhuang's show is just as good if not better.

Incredible use of technology with impressive Chinese style dancing telling a Silk Road story about a young princess and an artist who run off together. The costumes and choreography are superb and blend perfectly with the music.
The whole audience rotates with the performers which gives a unique experience. The show is very popular with Chinese tourists and even though hardly any English is spoken it is still a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Tickets are not cheap but when you see the show you realize it is worth every penny. If you are in Dunhuang do not miss this show. An additional bonus is that it is within easy walking distance of the Dunhuang Silk Road Hotel.

A perfect dancing and acrobatic show, performed by really enthousiastic people. Amazingly professional, but not so cool money-driven as we later saw in Xi-an. One of the highlights of our trip, and we made beautiful pictures.

Three different shows are performed in Dunhuang in different theatres. I decided to opt for the most expensive one as I was told it was by far the best. The show begins at 8 PM and costs 298 RMB. The venue is the brand new theater which is located not that far from the entrance of Mogao caves. I truly enjoyed the show even if I could understand only a little of what was going on. The narrator spoke in Chinese of course and I couldn’t understand what he said. Despite of that the show was really amazing. All the actors and actresses were fantastic. The costumes were awesome and there were also many special effects. The main feature of the show is that the audience will move to different places to follow the performers. Very good pictures can be taken as the performers are very close to the spectators. I think this show is really a must see for all those who spend their holiday in Dunhuang.

The theatre moves as you go to each new scene. For the Grottoe scenes the theatre moves inside a large cave and the visual and performance is truly unique.
