I visited on a recommendation from my guide. So glad I did. He explained the fortress and how it worked, including some areas that intruders could be captured unaware if they tried to enter the fortress as adversaries. Very interesting to have a local tell you about the area. Bonus was there were hardly any visitors there on the day.... More

Anyone who sclambers out on the choo-choo has probably done some wangled walk on the Great Wall daytrip or overnight via Beijing. Was great. Got a Lotta Cilla Black Love. Got the Bug: Wisny Enough. Suppose there are various ports to visit the long leaning dragon again. Leave them to it. Went close to a Wallsend Hadrianish thing reconstructed Cornwalling... More

I was there in mid Oct 2016 and was the last places of interest out of 4 in a day that covered over 200KM. I have high expectation for Jiayuguan Fortress but I felt it was not authentic compared to Yangguan. However, we were told by one guide that 80% of the construction was in the original state and the... More

We found the whole experience easy and pleasurable. The place is in very good condition and serves as a fine example of Ming archtecture.

This is a historic site worth seeing. However most of the structure appears to be rebuilt and there are various stalls, plus regular shows (with soldiers in ancient clothing), thus reducing the "ancient feel". There is a museum nearby. It is a good place to walk around.

Most of the fort is the old structure, but it has seen thorough restoration. There are plenty of photographs on display which shows the state of the fort before the restorations. Easy to walk around. There are a multitude of extra activities to partake in. Just outside the fort you can ride atv's or camels. Shoot tennis balls with cannons... More

This is a grant view of a huge landscape. To live and stay here as a solder is a difficult thing, I could image. Brave things to do. The tourist guide told us there is 1 "additional block" on the building, if we remove it, it will cause the total clapse of the fortress. interesting. I found it.

Absolutely nothing here that hints at the historically significant. However it is a nice recreated fort to walk through with other tourists, some amusement-park style vendors, drinks and occasional live shows. Walk the top of the walls for some great mountain views. Go with very low expectations and it is a fun couple of hours. The best part of this... More

The site is fascinating but touristy but there are ways to avoid the crowds. Just spend time wandering around the fort to see the scale and beauty of the place. However there was a crane in the site doing some building work and round every corner seemed to be a group of men repairing something. So photo opportunities were limited... More

Get there by bus #4 or 6 from the Jiayuguan city centre. Two things not to miss while on the visit to the fortress: 1. Exhibition of photos of the Great Wall of China (right before you exit the complex) and 2. once outside the complex head to the Great Wall museum. Also, it's possible to see both the First... More
