Spectacular tomb ruins from the Wei-Jin period that somehow seem to get little attention. The little museum and preserved brick paintings are stunning. Tomb no. 6 (only one you can visit) show scenes from daily life of the couple in the middle chamber (women on the left, men on the right; in three stages youth - adult - old age). The local gatekeeper can explain many details and the shop outside has souvenirs from the 80s with historic value.

3 months ago, we visited the tombs in the valley of the kings in Egypt. These tombs are just as spectacular in there own way. We were enthralled with what we saw!.

it is interesting for those who follow Chinese history, an experience for others who are just curious, the location and the garden with statues in the surrounding is truly amazing.

Worth a drive outside of Jiayuguan (20 minutes) to see 4th century tombs which display the funeral procedures and daily life of the time. Important to go with a guide who can explain the construction and layout of the tomb, and the meaning of the pictures. Impressive to see the construction of the tombs, which have no concrete or cement holding the stones together, yet completely stable for centuries under 10 m of soil.

You need a car to get to the tombs - we hired a driver and a guide from China Highlights. Descend the stairs into a barrel-vaulted series of rooms and marvel at the scenes painted on the wall tiles, about 1,500 years ago. Photos are forbidden, but there are some copies in a replica tomb in the small museum at the site entrance, which you could probably photograph.

We didn't know this place until we overheard someone asking for direction. Then we browsed and checked on website and decided to pay a visit before leaving Jiayuguan. The paintings on the tomb were unique and pretty, rarely seen in other places and museums. It's actually not too far and cost RMB100 renting a round trip taxi to the place. The day we visited, there were only two small groups including the two of us. We were able to take our time seeing the paintings as long as we would want. Definitely worth a visit.

It's only one tomb open to the public, but well worth it. The tomb is empty but the wall tiles have the most wonderful minimalist paintings of daily life; hunting, harvest, baking, horses, camels, boats. Really not a long time is needed about an hour will do and very much worthwhile.

This location is a bit off the beaten path. Very few tourists come out here and the road out was in a horrible condition.

Once there there is only one tomb open to visitors to preserve the others from decay. It does however offer an amazing glimpse into the ancient history of the area.
