A New Experience

Our guide told us that lesser people are maintaining this way of fishing as it is a hassle and the cormorant are unable to catch many fishes. By a certain age, they have to let go... read more

My friend had read about this, and we figured we'd go ahead and give it a try. It was a bit of a drive to get to the place, and lasts for about 30 mins or so (which I think is plenty of time). Basically, you follow alongside the fisherman on a motorized boat and watch. Our boat did turn... More

Not sure how anyone can't say this isn't animal cruelty. Some birds tied to the boat to give a good picture - one kept on trying to swim/fly away, all birds have string tried around their necks to stop them swallowing the fish so the fisherman can force it out of their throat, & have hooks on them so they... Cormorant fishing is one of those things my husband and I heard of when we were both children (from the children's book "The Story About Ping") and when we found out we could see it in Yangshou, we were excited and eager to see it, while we still could. It is not used anymore (as there are much better ways... More

We booked a night time cormorant fishing viewing experience and ended up having the boat to ourselves (2 adults and 3 kids), which was great as it meant we didn't have to jostle with others for a good viewing seat at the front of the small boat, and could move freely around the boat as we wanted. After we boarded... More

Our guide told us that lesser people are maintaining this way of fishing as it is a hassle and the cormorant are unable to catch many fishes. By a certain age, they have to let go the cormorants as they are smart enough to eat the fishes instead. We had a pretty good experience as we were on bamboo rafts.... More

This activity is one of those things you may only get to do once. You go out after dark, get onto a small raft and follow the cormorant fisherman onto the river where his birds fish. Some people worry about the cruelty involved in this method of fishing, however I am happy to say that I did not see anything... More

I wish I had read these reviews in detail before going. I booked the excursion hoping to see those iconic images at dusk of the fishermen against the backdrop of the karst mountains and the river. It was pretty far from that. Forget about the pictures. When you get there it's already so dark you can't take any decent shot... More

As I understand, only few capable cormorant trainers remained. Young people prefer to do something else. I understand it took few years to train cormorant, not all succeeded. Hurry, few years and cormorant fishing will disappear from the world. They do it now only for tourists, not for real fishing. Amazing birds, our fisherman work and talk with them as... More

We were offered the opportunity to go and see the traditional method of Cormorant fishing as an evening excursion. I have to say that my husband was more keen to go on this excursion than I was but I did actually find it really interesting. A group of about 11 of us went and we were very fortunate to find...
