Fantastic views from the top. Possible the most amazingly beautiful views in Yangshou County. Photographers haven. But to get to the top, you have to ascend a little over 300 metres.

I have hiked to the top of a number of mountains near Yangshuo and so far Laozhai is my favorite. The views from the top are excellent and you can't beat the price (free).

I started out near West Street in Yangshuo and took a local city bus (number 5 I think) to the Southern Bus Station. From there I took a bus to Xing Ping for 7rmb which took about 40 minutes. From the Xing Ping station I headed west towards the river via "Old Street". Immediately before the river on your left side is a white archway with Chinese writing on it. Go through that and you will see signs for Laozhai Mountain along with Tripadvisor logos.

The hike/climb to the top is all stone stairs which are at funky angles/heights and are a hodgepodge of stones and cement. They can be very steep at times. There is also a metal ladder to climb near the top. If you are in good shape and adventurous, it shouldn't be too difficult and might take about 30 minutes up and 15-20 down. If you are in medium shape and not so adventurous, it will take longer and be fairly challenging. If you aren't in good shape and have difficulty with uneven pathways, then you may want to skip this attraction.

At the top there is a small temple structure with ok views, but climb up a little higher (past the antennae tower) for the best views. Bring a super wide angle lens for the clasic shot of the river bending around the mountains.

Overall I enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to anyone looking for exercise and great views of the area.

This was the best thing we did during our visit to Guilin/Yangshou areas. I opted to skip the Moon Hill and Silver Cave (as too touristy) and glad I did. The path starts adjacent to the boat docks in Xing Ping. It took close to an hour to get to the top, as it was extremely hot and took plenty of breaks. It's really not that far but it does get steep. Lots of steps and a few ladders closer to the top - you just have to take your time. I'm 60 so most of you can do it. Plus there aren't really too many people on the trail so there is a certain solitude to be had. The views at the top are worthy of all your hard work and will provide a true Kodak moment! Spent probably 30 mins at the top, soaking it all in and resting up a bit. You need to bring lots of water and any snacks (if you want). I went in August when it was jungle hot and never sweat so much in my life even though it's under cover all the way until the top. And try to pack out everything you take in. It was somewhat depressing to see lots of empty plastic water bottles on the summit, leave no trace is still a foreign concept to too many people. The walk down takes 30 mins tops, depending on how slippery it is. I would imagine if it is raining or misting heavy the trip would not be worth it, as the trail would be quasi dangerous and the view at the top stifled by the poor weather. Otherwise go for it, you won't regret it.

Its a fairly steep but short 30 - 40 min hike up to the top of the mountain. The path is well maintained and there were a lot of people, so no chance of getting lost. It's a little precarious in places, but nothing extreme.

The view on the top is superb, and the best view of the Li River and surrounding area that you will find. There is a formal pagoda and viewing platform at the top, but you are better off ignoring that and climbing up the rocks to the side of it from which there are stunning vistas and some great photo ops.

We got a bus from Yangshuo South Station for 7rmb each, which took 30mins.

When we got to the bus station there, we took a right down a street with empty shops all along it (and annoying old women saying 'hello! Bamboo?'), and walked right to the end, took a right and then an immediate left before the bridge, and walked along.

You'll come to the Li River, and right beside it is the mountain (walk behind the white buildings on the right where the road starts to rise again).

Someone has actually painted the Tripadvisor logo at the entrance, and entry was free may i add. It took 30mins up but we did have a bit of a sweat going by the end. It's pretty steep in places & there's a ladder to climb after the doorway near the top.

Once you make the top you have a small, covered seating area, with great views all around.

We also opted to climb the rocks and sit the other side of the cables etc. that you will see at the top, and had a nice little picnic on a few flat rocks, and you could tell many people had sat there before. There was a bit of litter around but not very much. The views from here were equally amazing and gave a great view of the picture on the 20rmb note.

We sat here for approx. 2hrs and it was very peaceful to read with such amazing views.

The walk down was also tricky due to the small steps but obviously not as tough.

We had a quick browse around the town for an hour after but opted to return to Yangshuo from the bus station we were dropped off at - the people at the stations are used to Westerners making this same journey so the bus trips were easy peasy!

We stayed at a hotel near the Yangshuo North Bus station. Early morning, we took a bus no. 5 to the Yangshuo South Station. The bus fare is only RMB 1. Upon alighting at the South Station, we took another bus to Xing Ping. It cost RMB 10. The Laozhai Mountain is just located at the quay in Xing Ping. There were many passenger launches and engine propelled bamboo rafts berth by the quay. Dozens and dozens of tourists were boarding the launches for a ride along the Li River. As the sunlight shone on the river banks, I was mesmerized by the stunning and gorgeous riverbank view. The karst mountain range scenery around the river bends was so fascinating and picturesque and glitters in the calm meandering Li River. It was a natural art masterpiece.

There is a directional sign that showed the way to hike up Laozhai mountain. I patiently strolled up my way up the hill. I met a local who told me that it took about an hour to reach the summit. I was so determined and thought it was an easy task. I had hiked up several mountains in China - Emeishan, Taishan, Laoshan, Leshan, etc and when I was in Guilin, I also climbed up Diecai Mountain and the hill at Yangshuo Park with much ease. I thought this hike up Laozhai mountain should be fairly easy and `chicken feat'. I was wrong.

The steps were not made of concrete slabs and as I got higher up the hill, the steps became narrower and there was no railing to hold on. My muscles were aching after a hike up Yangshuo hill a day before this climb. After half an hour of climbing, I started to pant heavily with each step up. Added to the rough terrain was my height phobia and I could feel the adrenaline rushing to pump my heart and blood vigorously up to the brain. I felt so insecure without a railing to hold on to and was worried to lose my balance and fell down the hill. At some point, I was just crawling on the hill using my hands flat on the steps to help in balancing my body. I felt so shameful with such coward stunts and wonder if those climbers coming down the steps were laughing at me.

A couple who came down told me that the steps up are even steeper. One of them observed that my legs were shaky and discouraged me to climb further. I just don't like to succumb to any obstacles but the terrain is not as easy as I thought. It is a bit of rough, physical demanding and risky. I climbed up another 10 mins and suddenly, I decided to give up.

The way down was much easier. I saw a 2 storey pavilion at my starting point and climbed up the second floor of the pavilion and realized that the view of the Li riverside was just equally gorgeous and beautiful.

It is challenging to climb up this Laozhai Mountain. What accounts for my failure? Not enough rest after a previous hike? Height phobia? Difficult terrain? Physical demanding? I think it is a mix of all these factors. I think basic physically fitness is crucial to take up the challenge. Not as easy as I earlier thought.

A tough mountain hike although it takes only 40 to 60 min to reach the top but it's just too steep in certain section that you even need to climb with your feet and hands. The very top of this mountain is the rocky viewpoint without any protection so proceed with caution and enjoy the gorgeous view of epic karst landform of Guiline

To get to the start of the path, follow the small trail of steps just beside XingPing ferry dock. You can use laozhaishan inn as a google map guide.

The climb up was definitely not easy, but it is definitely doable with having ample stops along the way. Good shoes are definitely recommended, it does get slippery in certain areas. On the way up, we saw locals in their skirts and some in sandals and we wonder how that is even possible.

Getting up there is bit of a challenge, steep steps and you also need to get up a leather. Even if you are in good shape you will probably sweat. However, it is a short hike (30-40 minutes), so it is also recommendable for family with children etc, just plan in more time (~1 hour) to get up.
The 360° view is definitely worth it!

Wasn't quite expecting how good the view was going to be from the top, more than worth the trip up the hill.

Took the bus from yangshuo to xingping and back, walked to the entrance from the bus station, and reached the top in 30-40 minutes. The path is slippery when wet so watch your step, especially coming down.

As others have mentioned, once you walk through the round white gate on your left when walking towards the pier you will see a trip advisor sign. Take a left here and follow the steps up. The trail starts on your left before the pavilion, arrows lead the way.

Sign at start of path attached.
