The Xingping Fishing Village is the place that feels like a blast from the past. The buildings are ancient well preserved building that looks like pre-war building with national flags hanging. The shops are commercialised selling poor imitations of beer fish or local Guangxi dishes. There are also local souvenir shops selling most cheap looking over priced items. Nevertheless the area has a unique charm as it is surrounded by beautiful karst mountains and barren grasslands. When you blend the two together, there is a unique tranquil peaceful feeling you don't usually experience.

My advice is to have a heavy late breakfast before you go there. The food and shops are forgettable. But the ambiance is worth the visit. To enjoy the calm and peace, you can also order coffee at cafes there, and just sip slowly to appreciate the joy of being in a blast from the past.

I would like to point out that some reviews about the Fishing Village is misleading as the Fishing Village is not the same as Xingping Town. The offical way of accessing fishing village is by trekking(2024). The hiking route toward to the fishing village is difficult to find as it hasn't used for a while. If you would like to visit the Fishing Village you can stay at Pomelo Hostel at Xingping. The hostel could provide directions and hidden gems of Xingping. Very knowledgeable hosts!

Xingping itself has become a tourist hotspot: it's beautiful, but I'm not a big fan of the crowds. The ancient village is cool, but the real draw is the scene from the 20 Yuan bill. Just north of the town, along the river, hundreds of tourists hold up their 20 Yuan for a picture of the Li River scene with karst mountains on either side. Start here in Xingping, but don't stay to long.

Instead, I would recommend the hike from Xingping to Yangdi. Along the way, you will need to cross the river 3 times -- arrange this before you get there with a tour group or with your hotel. The boat men are very likely to overcharge you. You can take a bus from Yangdi back to Yangshuo or Guilin when you are done.

It seems that traveling from Xingping to Yangdi is cheaper than going the other direction.
[If you start at Yangdi Dock and go south, you could pay up to 500 yuan for a trip that shouldn't cost more than 100]

The hike is fantastic, quiet, and jaw-droppingly beautiful! Along the way, there are a few waterfalls to enjoy, dragonflies, butterflies, and other fauna and flora. And of course, the amazing karst peaks along the Li River. Hiking is really the best way to enjoy this scenery [the bamboo boats are noisy and the 'cruises' are big, ugly, and crowded]

Most of the path is stone or paved, but there are a few places that can be confusing. Just keep following the river and look for alternate routes -- you'll find your way. There was one portion of the path that was washed out during our hike, but most of the hike is easy and flat.

There are a few restaurants along the way, and locals may be selling tourist nick-nacks or bottles of water.

We decided to cycle to Xingping from Yangshou we received a map from the hostel and they hired us out bikes the bikes had no gears but was not a problem. The ride is flat with not many hills. We rode through Fulli town then up to Xingping there is a tunnel to go through on the way to Fuli and this was dark and a bit scary to cycle through but otherwise the route was fine. We got away from all the husle and bustle of the city and cycled through many little villiages there were children running around and farmers in the rice fields and water ox being pulled along the street. The view is incredible as you cycle through the beautiful mountain scenery. The road is mainly flat and good condition until you get to Xingping where there is many pot holes. Xingping is not touristy at all just old town with locals around. There was a sign to old town an english speaking cafe and menu down a little lane which looks like building sites all round but the food at the cafe was good, there is lots of little markets around to with beautiful paintings. This leads to a path to climb Laozhai mountain. The cycle is quite a way and when we tried to get boat back no one would take us so I think the boats left early. You could cycle back or what we did as it was getting late was barter with the bus drivers to give you a lift back to Yangshou.

my boyfriend and I took a walk from xing ping to the fishing village. When we came down from the mountain, there was a house with a baking dog. Someone came told us that going to fishing village will be a 10yuan charge per person, if they walk us there, will be free. We said, that is ok, we don't need help from them. The guy made a call and a woman came out then she started following us. trying to show is ways, which we did not want to take, because it looked like a street they will try to make you buy things. We took a different route, she told us that route would lead us no where, but we found the Dock where we should get on the boat. we jumped on a boat which is ready to depart to go back to xing going, she went crazy, and started to stop the boat. She shouted to the boat driver to pull us off the boat, because we are 'her' passengers. We were asked to come off the boat, or go to another boat, because of her.(local people did not want to upset their own village people). We refused to come off the boat, because we have every tile to be on the boat, we should not be asked to come off the boat because this crazy woman who wants to make money on us. the delay upset the other passengers, and they started to talk to the woman to make her to understand that she can 'make' people to take her boat, if they don't want to. In her mind, me and my boyfriend would pay for the same amount for the boat anyway, why would not we take her boat?!!! she got to an argument with the other passengers and threaten to bit the other passengers up. We were very close to call the police, but our boat driver somehow made a deal with them, so we could leave the place. So, if you are walking to the finishing village, please be careful.

Got a bus from Yangshuo to Yangdi and then bamboo raft down the river to Xingping. Then bus back to Yangshuo. Scenery along the Li river was amazing. Unfortunately it began to rain when we arrived in Xingping.

Once you arrive on Xing Ping Island and get settled, the staff of the hotel invite you to see a traditional way of fishing with cormorants.

Walking on a nice path and then going through a grove of tangerine trees you finish the walk right on the Li River.

The fisherman will throw the fishing net several times so that one gets a nice shot and then will proceed to show how his cormorants get the fish. The birds will go into the water and catch fish, then go back to the fisherman who will press their neck and get the fish out of the bird.

It is an amazing experience to watch, even if slightly contrived! Please do not feel bad about the birds: They are the livelihood of the fisherman so he is not going to mistreat them.

Rather think about the beautiful interaction of humans and animals for their survival!

Bring a good camera, as the setting is spectacular with the river, the boat, the birds and the mountains in the back.

XingPing is a place for many attractions about 40-60 min from Yanshuo town. You can take motor boat to take you up and down Li River, which is not at all as good as Bamboo boats you can take in Yulong River. It's a bit too noisy for my taste. However the village it self is nice with small cafes, restaurants to spend an hour or two. The original Cormorant fishing is from XingPing which you can enjoy around sunset. Cormorant fishing is a traditional fishing method in which fishermen use trained cormorants to fish in rivers. You can also take LaoZhai hill hike that starts from XingPing river side, to explore the beautiful sunset by Li River.

The island area where the last few living fishermen live is worth a visit. There are a handful of fishermen who are in their 70s and 80s who live on the island on the Li River in Xingping. They will allow you to photograph them but the weather must be good as they are older. I suggest you work with a local tour company to arrange a visit. Quite a great experience.

There is really nothing much to see or do here...just a couple of old houses and quite a few makeshift roadside stalls maned by loud stall keepers with their super pestering skills. Poor location for photographers as well - the locals here are in modern clothings and there is hardly any scenery or architecture that is worth photographing as well...
