A beautiful gate, barbican and city wall. Unfortunately, it is not a real ancient architecture. It is a rebuilt historical site.
There are many stores and shops "in" the city wall and pavilions. So, seen from outside, it is an awesome “old” City Gate; seen from inside, it is a big shopping mall. ……a little ridiculous.
It is really a good place to take pictures. But remember, it is not a real historical spot.

We went there at night, beautiful light up. After the gate is an old street night market, we walked straight till cross junction, there was another street full of food.

It was a time zone transferring experience from one side to another side. The ancient pathway recalled many memories from movie i watched.

A beautiful and imposing fortress wall, that also acts as the entrance to the Old City. It's lit up beautifully at night. Once through the gate, there are food stalls, vendors, bakers, and bars. A wonderful place to walk around for the night, see some new things, get some snacks and drinks. It was Chinese New Year when we went, so many stalls were closed, but we still had a great time. Fairly easy to get to using public transport --we took the bus there, and we don't speak the local language.

Well maintained City Gate which (at night) gives impressive pictures and nice views. Due to the large amount of people around one need patience to klick the right shot. Old Town is quite nice and a very extensive long stretch. Worth to go to the end where there is a "real' old part with old arts and shops.

Plan to arrive at dusk, in time to catch the sunset and the golden hues thereafter. There's an entrance fee to climb up the wall, and it's worthwhile, especially if you're eligible for the student rate. There are also a few historical displays which aren't very well preserved, but still interesting. There are also numerous temples and alters at the gate. You can see the entire stretch of the Old Street from the top of the gate, an amazing light up at night.

The city walls and gates in Xi'an are more impressive overall but it's a nice spot to enter the old city in the evening

Now I may have this wrong but as far as I can see these three all link up, along with the bell tower gate at the West end.
Near the centre of Luoyang are two “old streets”, “Market streets”, “pedestrian streets”, pick your name, they cross each other with Meishuguan running East to West and the other running North to South. Accordingly there are 4 main entry points.
The old East gate, “Lijing Gate” is the most impressive and you can go up onto the wall there if you wish. The West gate is apparently also a bell tower, although entrance to the tower appears to be restricted. Be aware that the West end of the road seems to be mainly a garment industry region.
The North entrance brings you directly into the razzamatazz of the street food vendors and lots of hanging red lanterns. The South entrance is much more basic and feels a lot more real and dare I say impoverished.
If snacks are your thing then take the North entrance and experiment as far as you digestion will allow. As commented elsewhere, do take a good look at the general hygiene, cleanliness and age of any oil in use.
For me I loved the section walking from the East gate to the intersection. Sure there are the usual tourist tat places, amusement places, food outlets, but also real businesses with guys making a living NOT from tourists. (The guy forging coil springs was my highlight). It’s worth visiting this place twice, once in the daytime and once and night. It’s like 2 different places.
One word of warning, if you’re going late evening, go as a group or a couple at least, keep together and in sight of each other; DO NOT wander off the main streets. There are a number of anecdotal tales of woe doing the rounds, particularly featuring young western ladies. I cannot answer for the truth of these.

Not just the gate, but the whole street behind it. Here you can see, feel, hear and smell Luoyang’s old life style. It’s still far from mass tourism (though I noticed changes already), and you will mainly meet locals. It’s chaotic, the are food stalls everywhere, a huge antique mall, painting shops, music shops etc etc.
Probably one of the most picturesque streets of the city where you can enjoy daily life of Luoyang citizens.

but certainly nothing special. There are comparisons to the Muslim quarters in Xi'an, which I don't think is fair, more atmospheric in Xi'an. There are loads of souvenirs and snacks to be had, though, so it's worth a nice evening stroll if you have the time.
