Fairly interesting museum, nothing special, do this after you've done everything else Luoyang has to offer.

The Luoyang tomb museum consists of sample tombs excavated from different areas and from different dynasties. It gives a birds' eyeview of several different types of tomb designs and burial practices. However a lot of the items/wall paintings on display are just replicas. The original ones can be found in the Luoyang museum

Luoyang Tomb Museum - Nicely done, great representation of the old dynastic tombs. Good for a peaceful walk too.

This is clearly a very old museum and it feels as if it's long been forgotten and neglected. It's quite a trek out of Luoyang, but the 83 bus runs to the entrance from downtown for just RMB1.5. There is about a half mile walk from the entrance gate to the ticket office, where you just need to sign in as it's an (almost) free museum. Inside the rather dilapidated, run down buildings, you'll find a labyrinth of underground tombs, some of which are empty and some of which have ancient artefacts. From what little I could gather, the tombs are replicas but the artefacts are real. It is all a bit claustrophobic and you will need to keep crouching and ducking to see everything, but it's all very interesting. Once you emerge from the austere caverns, you'll find several exhibition halls in the grounds, although the only one open at the moment is the furthest hall, displaying the frescoes. This is a wonderful museum. You will have to pay RMB1 to put thin plastic covers over your shoes, but that's the only charge. It's a bit of a joke as they're so thin, they tear as you try to put them on. Everything inside is hermetically sealed behind glass, so their concern for dirt and dust is misplaced. Most of the exhibits are downstairs, something not readily apparent. To the west of the museum, you'll find the real tomb of one of the historic figures, underneath a vast mound. Don't miss this. It's not very well posted. A very good, but sadly clearly neglected museum well worth seeking out.

Great disappointment when you only
have one day visit...
Closed on Monday !!!
Opening hours need to be carefully checked before being published or no information at all would be better...
Thanks!

I visited the tombs not expecting much, but I enjoyed the audio tour quite a bit. They have a very nice collection of preserved frescoes they have dug up over the years in new district and surrounding cities from various times in history. Well worth a visit for history lovers.

If you only have time for one museum in Luoyang make it this one. The big museum in town has a good collection but it's likely you've seen similar items elsewhere. Not so with this place.

Tombs dating from the Han dynasty to the Song Dynasty have been painstakingly moved here and presented as they were found. They are all from the local area and some tombs have been found very recently.

There are pottery coffins, priceless frescoes and tomb funerary items displaced in situ. With the atmospheric lighting and tight spaces, it feels like you are discovering a secret place.

You won't get as much out of this place if you are claustrophobic or find it difficult to move into the tomb spaces sadly.

There is another section of the museum dedicated to tomb frescoes. Again fascinating.

The burial mound section of the museum was closed today.

Plenty of English explanations but I did find the audio guide useful (20 RMB). Entrance to the museum is free amazingly.

Toilets and there is an English book you can buy for 60 RMB.

The museum is located on the outskirts of town. Bus 83 and 27 goes here but we took a taxi, hailed for us by the hotel. We then took bus 83 back to the train station.

If you need a taxi a few came by on the main road which you could hail.

Don't miss this place, it will be 2 hours of your time well spent.

Took a taxi out here and had gotten the taxi to wait for us. The area is rather deserted with the road junction few hundred metres away. Didnt see a single other taxi when i was there.

As described before by other travellers, the museum is good. I like the environment. Hilly, windy and quiet. Can imagine the past battles fought here on Mangshan and ironically, also a favoured resting place for nobles.

It took about 1-1.5 hour to finish. We paid our taxi Rmb150 including his wait time to and fro Longmen grotto. One way by meter is about 50.

This amazing museum is located just outside of northern Luoyang.

This amazing museum has little English or signs, I nearly missed the large tomb mounds! This site is one of my highlights from my trip to China. The museum has three parts:

1. Underground tomb museum with ancient tombs moved to this location.
2. Fresco tomb museum of paintings and art from tombs (no photos).
3. Large tomb mounds you can enter (off to the side off the museum).

It's worth taking a taxi to the White Horse Temple after visiting this site.
