- trapezoidhdDurham, North Carolina43 contributionsIn Top 5 of the Southeastern U.S.The Birmingham Museum was a mind-blowing, unexpected surprise to this art aficionado, having been to over 150 museums in the U.S. First, the noble and grand building is a work of art itself with the collection showing off its holdings exquisitely. Most every period is represented, with the second floor devoted to a stellar holding (for a museum of this size) African, Asian, Pre-Columbian & Native American work. The BMOA features some of the finest handiwork of many artists, e.g, Theodore Butler, Frank Duveneck, Henry Raeburn, Ernest Lawson, John Twachtmann - mostly pivotal American artists. The cafe lunch was terrific, and the staff at this institution could not have been more pleasant or accommodating. This is clearly one of Birmingham's treasures and makes a visit to this city a must!Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten March 3, 2024
- Cookie GMontauk, New York33 contributionsBeautiful collectionI was one of the only patrons there mid-week. It felt so serene to have it to myself but I do hope more people go. The Wedgewood collection was particularly beautiful and the courtyard sculpture garden was a peaceful place to sit. And it's free! Very friendly staff too. A gem.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten April 26, 2024
- Nancy A290 contributionsA wonderful museumI've been to this great art museum in the past, but came back to see the special exhibit Heroes & Villains: the Art of the Disney Costume. The museum itself is free with a $30 fee for this exhibit. It was amazing and well worth the fee. Try to get there before mid August 2024 when the exhibit closes.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten May 9, 2024
- scott rSilver Spring, Maryland769 contributionsVaried collection, extensive Wedgewood as well as American, Asian, Native, decorative arts, minor impressionist, etc.A little hodge podge in the arrangments, but I did not find this distracting - sometimes a bit of relief vs. solid rooms of paintings is refreshing. If decorative arts are not your thing, they do add atmosphere. Skipped the Disney stuff (no interest) and thus a great free way to spend a few hours. Not crowded, unhurried. A good survey museum and you leave feeling satisfied, neither too little nor too much.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten May 30, 2024
- Ann M34 contributionsI highly recommend visiting the Birmingham Museum of Art!The Birmingham Museum of Art is a hidden gem! It is so nice that there is no admission fee and parking is easy. The exhibits are gorgeous and there is so much to see! I did pay the fee to visit the special exhibit of Disney Heroes and Villains costumes and it was so worth it. I also love that they have a desire to give back to the local Birmingham community.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten July 22, 2024

We visited the Birmingham Museum of Art this weekend when we were visiting from Nashville. The museum is free, so it's definitely worth exploring if you've never been before. However, the museum is on the small side, and its collection didn't exactly wow me. I did enjoy a small temporary exhibit they had (Celestia Morgan: REDLINE) and that they seemed to highlight pieces by artists with Alabama connections in their collection (some of the museum labels had markings to denote that the piece was created by an Alabama artist). The museum has a cafe, but it didn't seem to be open when were there (it was empty and we didn't see any staff that could/would seat us, so we assumed it was closed). It has a small gift shop near the staircase on the main floor, and a small parking lot as well. It wasn't a bad museum, but I don't think I'd recommend it over some of Birmingham's other museums and cultural sites - some of which are truly excellent). Still, worth a visit if you haven't been or are interested in a temporary exhibit or new acquisition!

A beautiful museum with a huge collection of art. Admission was free and staff members were kind. They had really cool displays, not just European art, an incredible Native American art collection!! Bathrooms were accessible and clean. They have small folding chairs you can carry around for free. You can stop to look at specific pieces or just to take a quick break.

Incredible selection of Asian art donated by several families . One gallery has a unusual collection of wedge wood . Galleries of European art , it not of my taste . The American art selection was wonderful as was the small impressionist collection . Well worth the visit and it was free with a donation box. We spent about 1 1/3 hours there . Actually a real museum nut could spend more time , but it was sufficient for me

The presentation is ordered by donor making it very confusing. You have paintings mixed with oyster plates and dining utensils. Photos mixed with paintings with only the donor in common. It makes no sense at all. Exhibitions fork in all directions causing you to retrace your steps.
You have staff using speaker phones while others did listen to loud music. On entry the receptionist simply pointed to a map with nothing else to add. On a global scale we haven't experienced anything like that at any other art museum.
But there are some rays of light. You have works of Diane Arbus, Georgia O'Keeffe, Pissarro, and Gainsborough. Entry and parking is on the back and it is free making a visit survivable.

Well laid out with many pieces that we thoroughly enjoyed. Often, we go to museums and generally they are all laid out the same. This was similar, but with a welcome perspective about some of the less savory aspects of certain pieces as well as a larger number of artifacts from artists that are typically underrepresented. In addition, there was a fantastic temporary exhibit that likely gives insight into the philosophy of the museum. We spent a good portion of our time in the Expanding Darshan exhibit. It was a great stop.

This is a must-see for anyone interested in numerous periods and styles of art. The collection is so impressive. It ranges from European and American art on the first floor to pre Columbian, African, Native American, and Asian art on the second floor. The visitor will see works by American works by Durand, Inness, Twachtman, Metcalf, Lawson, Heade, Frank Lloyd Wright and many more. Plan on spending at least two hours here if you have any interest in art. They have a nice gift shop too.

We decided to pay the art museum a visit to stay in the air conditioning on the warm august Saturday. It was free and definitely worth a trip. The flow of the museum seemed natural and very easy to follow. They had many wonderful pieces from around the world.

We could have spent many more hours here, but we were short on time. Nevertheless, we really enjoyed this museum. Please note, due to covid the front door was locked and you had to enter in the back. We didn't know there was a parking lot also located in the back of this museum. Totally enjoyed the time we spent here and would visit again. Free, but donations are encouraged.

Thank you for being open on Sunday afternoon so we had something to enjoy while visiting. Two floors of well curated exhibits! Sculpture garden so-so. Could you put on your website information about the free parking adjacent to the museum? We parked 6 blocks away and walked over in sweltering heat. Would have loved to park there. No cafe?
