Was a good experience to personally visit the border of North Korea from Dandong .

Rented a binocular from the wharf for 5mins to see overland. Certainly feel a contrast.

Walking along the broken bridge with background playing Chinese evergreen songs enhance my experience and bringing back history.

Overall worth my overnight stay in Dandong.

As part of our stay in Dan Dong, we visited the broken bridge, which was partly bombed by the Americans.
Much of this bridge is visited by Chinese war veterans and their families.
Worth a visit to walk along and looking over to north Korea

bombed by the Americans in the Korean war to stop supplies/troops etc crossing over into North Korea the bridge goes about halfway across the river and is just as it was back in 1953, most interesting to walk out on it and look at North Korea just a few hundred metres away, a must visit site if your in Dandong, also interesting you can take a small boat cruise from the Chinese side right over to North Koreas side maybe only 25mtrs off shore well worth doing

Great backstory on this bridge, and definitely worth a visit. You can get closer to DPRK on the bridge than with the boat tours!

The Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge is a combined road and rail bridge that runs from Dandong in China to Sinuiju in DPRK. When I travelled to DPRK it was by coach on the outward journey and then by train over the bridge back into Dandong. It was an incredible experience to travel between the two countries and to experience such stark differences in a very short distance. There are some excellent views of the bridge from the waterfront in Dandong and is a definate must see when in the city.

If you are one of the few Westerners travelling to North Korea via the border town of Dandong, you will undoubtedly pull into the train station. And if you have some spare time turn right when leaving the station and walk a few blocks to the river and have your first look at North Korea and the Yalu River Broken Bridge. And, spoiler alert, there is no tension. It was in fact quite peaceful and deserted when we came to visit in the morning. A few security guards but they were disinterested in us. We mostly wandered and took pictures of statues and monuments and the bridge of course with the Hermit Kingdom on the other side. Certainly, this is where one can visually see the stark difference between the third world conditions of North Korea on one side of the Yalu River and the affluent, more commercialized condition on the other.

As for the bridge itself, you can pay an admission fee to walk to the end but we chose not to as there didn't seem to be much to attract us to walk on the bridge halfway across the river, especially since in less than an hour we would be taking the train all the way across anyway. Still, a much photographed location with huge political connotations.

Came here after completing a brief tour of North Korea. For me visiting this bridge was a must. It feels very strange to be so close to the closed of kingdom that is North Korea. If you are in Dandong then this one of the main things to come and see. Having said that, the history behind this bridge is quite upsetting, however this just adds to the significance of the bridge and the experience of visiting it.

What can your say? It is an old, badly built and poorly maintained bridge that crosses the border from China to N Korea, it says a lot about the friendship and that state the N Korea is in purely by looking at the way the bridge is.

The bridge tells part of the story of the Korean War but what is more telling is toi stand on the end of it to compare the view of Dandong and the view of N Korea and then decide for yourself which side is better off.

There is rich symbolism in the bridge stopping halfway with pylons standing like sentinels the rest of the way to the DPRK side. You can walk out to the middle of the river from the Chinese side to loud music and lots of Chinese flags and stare across to the other side with a disused fairground, including an old ferris wheel. and until you visit North Korea, looking across to the other side is deep in mystery. The bridge speaks volumes about today as it does about the history.
