Was with a tour group and we reached early in the morning around 9ish to avoid the hordes of tourists and the merciless hot sun. I would say it’s a place where most Chinese would be able to relate easily since it’s a scene from the famous “Journey to the West” novel. Other than that, basically the mountains are like... More

Pretty much the whole time you are in the Turpan Depression, you are driving around and in the Flaming Mountains. It really isn't necessary to go to the tourist bus parking area and pay to look at the world's largest thermometer.

Date of visit: 18/09/2016 As the flaming mountain is visible from everywhere you don't need to pay the ticket entrance if you have no intention to climb it (the local driver said it was possible) or pay extra bucks to get in a small plane (maybe 300 yuan for 20 mn... not sure) and fly over the mountain which could... This is a good location the view the scenic Flaming Mountains. However, it's been built to accommodate large crowds and drain their wallets as much as possible. It's mostly built around the movie Journey to the West. It's possible to pay to take photos with people dressed up, a few old carriages or pay for a ride on a donkey... More

Amazing mountains right in the desert that change their appearance depending on the time of day and year.

The flaming mountains look unique from the plane but not too great on the ground. The info at the spot are numerous
