We stayed in Shaxi for two nights to see a festival. It was an excellent experience. Our hotel was the Aoxiu Zige Hotel, which is not listed in tripadvisor, but was a lovely experience. It is walking distance from the main square where there are two nice restaurants and some cafes, as well as shops and a temple.

The ancient town of dali is pretty nice. As my own experience i prefer it during night time. Many people have small street shop selling several things.

Love this little town, been twice in a week. Passed through last week with customers and ended up staying for 2 days. Really lovely quaint town. Loved it so much i took my family back and the kids loved it, horse rides, quiet ancient streets, good food, lots of nicknacks for them to buy too.

Having been driven some way into the hills and then down into the valley where this town was situated, we were taken to an enclosed courtyard restaurant for lunch. We then walked to the main town square and I was amazed at how the place looked as it likely would have done hundreds of years ago. The town square had... More

We went there for a couple of hours. We stayed for lunch and for a walk down the street. Nice view. Some shops. Good photo shooting.

Our guide suggested hiking down from the grotto to Shaxi Ancient town and it was a great experience. The hike itself was very easy going on a well-paved path. There were lovely views of the surrounding countryside and the town itself. Once there we wandered around the streets, had excellent coffee in the main square and just generally enjoyed the... More

This little town may not be on many recommended tourist attractions or itineraries, but it's well worth a visit or a day trip out of Dali or Lijiang. The town is not big but retain many of the original architecture, Take a walk through the town and have a coffee facing the 'cinema' stage in the town centre, then walk... More

Loved this town - quiet, out of the way, and what Lijiang might have been like decades ago. We wandered the streets, had lunch on the main square, and hiked the hills. Don't miss the hike that heads towards the grottoes- about 6mi round trip, well marked. Start out from the village just to the north of the town, look... More

Shaxi (沙溪古镇) is the real ancient town, locates between Dali & Lijiang, closer to Dali. If you are looking for the true colour of ancient town, this is it! Travel by hired car, is the best option to visit Shaxi. You have to hire the car with driver as tour guy. To get trust people, it would be better to... More
