After many dashes across Macedonia, it was time to finally visit. This was the start and a good one at that! The centuries of history survive here and this fortress is a great place to start. This was the capital of the 1st Bulgarian Empire during the 10th century and if the walls could just talk! There's great views of... More

At £0.60 for adults and £0.30 for children it's well worth a visit. The view from the wall is exceptional. There's not a lot to see otherwise but it's a nice walk up to the fortress too. There is a cafe just outside the wall too. Highly recommended.

When we were in Sofia, we learned that Ohrid had once been the capital of Bulgaria. This mighty fortress, built during the 10th century by the Bulgarian king, is the most obvious legacy of that time. Its towers and walls make it a very impressive piece of military architecture. The castle walls dominate the historic core of old Ohrid. Yet... More

Like a lot of these, they are best viewed from the outside. There's not much to do here, and signage is non existent. However........the views are amazing, and the walls of the fortress are in pretty good shape. Up top overlooking Ohrid and seeing the beautiful Macedonian flag flying high is a pretty powerful experience. Take your time to walk... More

The town is dominated by this fortress so worth the walk uphill to explore. Only about a 1 euro to go inside and go up the walls for a great view of the town.

Samuel's Fortress is a fortress in the old town of Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia. Ohrid is notable for once having had 365 churches, one for each day of the year, and has been referred to as a "Jerusalem" (of the Balkans) Cheap entry in the fortress and breathtaking view of the whole city....

For a very low fare you can climb the walls and get great views of the lake, mountains and surrounding villages.

Me and my wife where here in September. Fortress is a must see place, totally cheap (ridiculously cheap for European standards - I would say). The sights are impressive and the town of Ohrid is at Your hand.
