We were here as part of a group tour in September 2022 and came here on a walking tour around the town. We approached from the woods in the hill behind it, so had the full view of the church and the lake in front, which was stunning.

There was actually a wedding taking place here when we were there (you'll see the rose petal confetti in one of the photos, as well as the bridal party to the side of the church) - can't think of a more beautiful place for a wedding.

Located on a natural platform of rocks that naturally rises above Lake Ohrid. It dates from the end of the 13th century. You can see St. Jovan Kaneo from the boardwalk areas from a distance- a beautiful sight. Viewing the church in the day or night is a treat. It's popular for people having meals, taking in the views, or just having peaceful conversations. This is a must see!!!

The journey to the church is very picturesque and offers great views across the lake. The grounds of the church are easy to navigate. History is described In English. Boatmen hover and provide transport to the town by boat.

This is probably the most photographed building in the town and its not hard to see why. The best and easiest way to get here is to follow the boardwalk along the coast and just keep going - a lovely walk and not too far. The views along the lakeside and of the church itself are just stunning with the backdrop of clear blue water and the surrounding greenery. When you get here there are plenty of places to sit and a few people selling trinkets. It doesn't cost a great deal to enter the church, which is small inside but beautiful and well worth it.

Despite there are many more important Churches and Monasteries in Ohrid area, this one, the Church of St. John the Theologian, or simply the Jovan Kaneo Church is the most photographed one, maybe in all Macedonia.
That's because of its unmatched setting, right above the lake on a small cliff. Moreover, the Church is just outside the old town (you need around 15 min walk to reach it) so it's looks isolated.
The only reason I deduct one star is a pretty modest interior with mostly whitewashed and black burned of candles walls.

the Monastery is impressive, simple and elegant. this is my favorite place from all places. its quiet, people are friendly and full of history. very good for prayers. the frescoes are amazing. Note: the Church is 20m from city center and its not an easy walk once you get to the location.

Saint Kaneo is a historical site located on a cliff overlooking Lake Ohrid. It's a short walk from the Old Town, Old Bazaar Street, boardwalk, and Kaneo Beach. The tariff is inexpensive to enter. There are picturesque views of the lake and mountains with access to beaches, fortress, wooden boardwalk dock, Old Town and Old Bazaar Street.

Worked our way up the hill to the fort and then down to Church of St John at Kaneo. Church at this location from 4th century but current church from 10th century. Costs 150 MKD to enter the church. Half the fun is getting to the church. Can also see if from a boat.

If you are in Ohrid. Don't miss the chance to view this church. You can either reach it after having visited the castle or by walking next to the water behind Sv Sofija. From either way it should take 20 min. The view was really spectacular (if good weather of course). Great place to take some pictures. And there are some bars and restaurants in the neighborhood to enjoy the site! It is also possible to take a boat tour. The entrance fee for the church is 100 denar.
