We stayed in the Coconut Grove Bridge Hotel, so we had an excellent view from our window (and later from the terrace as we ate breakfast) of the fishing boats coming in and the market.
It was a beautiful, fascinating sight, with women arriving early and setting up food stands, dozens of men waiting perched on the bridge for the fishing boats to come in, and just lots of hustle and bustle everywhere.
The boats were beautiful and most of them had some sort of foreign flag flying from the foremast, which our taxi driver told us was just for show; they used to fly signal flags, but now that everyone has cell phones, they just call each other if they need to communicate. It was nice to see lots of US flags both on the boats and in the taxis; it's heartwarming to go to a country where they so openly like Americans (it helps that the Obamas had visited Cape Coast in the previous year).
The lagoon and market were great. Our driver told us that they are there every day except Tuesday, when they let the sea rest.

Elmina Lagoon provides the pulse of the fishing village that surrounds it. The place reminded me of Jerusalem’s Old City or Kumasi’s Kejetia Market: an overflow of activity as people go about their daily routine, in this case setting out to sea to catch fish in a wide array of colorful boats. It is an interesting experience walking through the streets by the shore as one takes in the atmosphere. I found an excellent vantage point at Fort St. Jago, a small hill just north of Elmina Castle. Worth a quick stroll through the area to take in the pageantry.

If you are visiting Elmina castle, stay for a bit and see fishermen life! It is interesting to observe local life. You can even buy fresh fish, if you have a place, where to cook it or ask at the hotel. Great experience!

Went here to photograph fishing boats, fish mongers, market area and central commerce. On a weekday, it is fast and furious and easy to get overwhelmed and run over. These are the place I love to shoot in but nearly everyone who saw my cameras (especially the women) was very aditiment that they did not want their picture taken. Worked with a few fisherman and was able to get some good shots but disappointing given the target rich setting.

Thd landing of the fish is s wonderful sight.smell, noisy, lots of hustle and bustle, women everywhereselung fish of all sizes and shapes. Very much worth walking gingerly through the crowd, ducking to avoid women carrying large metal bowls of fish on their heads, avoiding stepping on dropped fish. RESPECT the locals and ONLY take pictures WITH PEOPLE'S PERMISSION.
Wonderful array of boats if you can get close to them.

Elmina is a big, lively coastal town with lots of traditional fishing boats and trader stalls - well worth seeing! The locals can get quite aggressive if you just walk up and start taking photos of them. However, if you approach with care and respect, show them your camera and let them decide if they are OK with you taking their photo then things are bokoh! (fine).

The Elmina Lagoon is now blocked off by tin walls because of the construction of a new bridge, this significantly takes away from the view of the Lagoon and the fishing boats that used to be quite vibrant. The parts of the Lagoon you can view from ground level are just dirty and polluted.

If you visit Ghana, this is a must see location. It's educational for those who are interested in history...slave trade. The scene is simply beautiful especially around 6:30 pm. The people are very friendly.I think that's why I loved Ghana, hospitality was amazing everywhere I went.

it is one of the best place to see and discover in Ghana. Even though it is just next to the Elmina Castle - turist attraction that stays empty and dead - lagoon is like a volcano of energy. Don't miss a walk along the beach covered with boats and harbor.
Great place to take photos but be careful as people dont seem to like be photographed.

….is the only way to describe it. We spent a couple hours one early morning watching the fisherman bring in their catch, sell it to the various vendors and then stood on the bridge as the crowd of residents and consumers continued to swell as they waited to purchase some fresh fish. It was truly amazing.
