We visited Roatan in January of 2022 and booked a private tour with Roatan Adventure Tours.
When we disembarked our cruise ship we walked through the port, up a steep flight of stairs, down a short hill and were met by our tour guide Dolphus. Two of our group opted to take a cab rather than take the stairs and the hill and it only cost them $2, well worth it for those with mobility issues.
Dolphus was our tour guide and he was outstanding. Friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to answer all of our questions about Roatan. Dolphus gave us great recommendations for stops on our tour, and gave us plenty of opportunity to stop for scenic views and photographs.
Our first stop was to a Sloth Sanctuary that also had guinea pigs and monkeys as well. The animals are all rescues, and are living there as they are unable to be released into the wild safely for a variety of issues. We spent about 45 minutes at this site, and we got to hold guinea pics, sloths, as well as play/feed with the monkeys.
We took a driving tour that allowed us to stop at some local vendors, as well as some stunning sites with views out over the ocean. Part of the tour was a drive through an area populated by locals, as well as an area populated by non-locals along a beautiful sand beach.
Along the drive Dolphus stopped so we could buy and eat produce from locals, and we had the most amazing Mangoes (two varieties) and Rambutans (similar to Lychees). All of the fruits were fresh, sweet, and super juicy!
We visited a local chocolate factory and this stop was amazing as we got a lesson on how the chocolate is made, and then given plenty of time to sample different chocolates, and then buy from a very large selection of chocolates made right there, all at great prices. Right next to the chocolate factory is a small locally owned git shop that had a good selection of items that are made on the island by local artisans; this is important to us as we like to purchase real souvenirs when we travel, not the mass produced items so prevalent in many places.
Lastly we stopped for lunch at a restaurant recommended by Dolphus and it was the most amazing, fresh cooked food. Between our group we had Conch, Red Snapper, Iguana, plantains, beans and rice, salad, and icy cold beers and cocktails.
At the end of the day Dolphus dropped us back at the cruise terminal, and we had time to look around the port before we had to get back on the ship.
This tour was one of our absolute favorites. At no time where we worried that we wouldn't get back to the port on time. Dolphus was amazing, made sure we saw everything we wanted to, as well as giving us a few wonderful surprises, and we will not hesitate to book this tour again when we are in Roatan again.
