Elephanta is an island off the Mumbai (Bombay) coast. So the first point is to get to Mumbai. This is one of the most connected cities in India.

I took a boat from the Gateway of India to here - the journey was maybe 45 minutes. The island has lots of market stalls up a long stair case and most of them take credit card, or any currency. You can get a guide if you want - they tried to charge 1500 rupees at the jetty, but once... More

Mumbai doesn't have as much to offer in terms of tourists sights than the rest of India, so the Elephanta Island and its caves are a must when visiting this city. You start by the Gateway of India. The Elephanta Island was named by the Portuguese from a statue of an elephant. This statue is no longer here, but very... More

After a short time in India you become very familiar with the Hindu Gods and the various statues and stone relief carvings of them. The only thing that makes the caves on Elephanta Island different, and worth a visit, is that everything was carved out of the solid granite landscape. Similar to Petra, the caves were hand dug, rather than... More

A stay in Mumbai will be incomplete without visiting Elephanta Caves. These caves are located on Elephanta Island in the Arabian Sea near Mumbai, India. The Elephanta Island was so named by the Portuguese, after the statue of an elephant near the landing area of the island. However, the mass of stones comprising the statue were removed to the Victoria... More

You get the boat just by the Gateway of India. It takes just under an hour. When you arrive it is either a walk or a short dotty train journey - well worth the go. You then have to pay to got to the caves - you walk up a lot of steps - you can have men carry you... More

you can get to the Elephanta Island by boat from the India Gate, it takes around one hour, there you have to pay extra to visit the caves, in my opinion overpriced attraction, there are many stands with souvenirs and restaurants

If you only have limited time in Mumbai and/or are going to see Ajanta Caves or Ellora then I would definitely consider skipping the Elephanta Caves. The entrance is very expensive for foreigners and as the caves are rather underwhelming, it is pricey for what you get. You wouldn't be asked to pay these prices in Northern Europe. The boat...
