Elephanta Caves is situated in the Elephanta Island which is formerly known as fortress city or Gharapuri.The elephanta caves have beautiful sculptures and carvings,encompassing a Lord Shiva temple.It is also declared as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Awesome island. If you visiting gate way of india then do take ferry to this place from there. Its just 2~ hours from mumbai. Awesome place to hand out.

You have to buy ticket for you at Gate Way of India. Many small ships/boats are there. No need for special or prior booking.

Near elephanta caves there are no hotels but lots of restaurants where you can take rest and the visit of elephanta caves for 4 to hours

There are lots (from memory, circa 70+) of steep steps to reach the plateau of the cave entrance. The locals do offer a sedan chair ride up, but not sure how comfortable / stable that would be. Don't forget it's also circa 1... More
