We had to cross through this medina from our hotel to go to the Grand Mosque. We didn't notice anything spectacular other than the arts and crafts and local delicacies sold there.

busy streets, lots of vendors, a little dirty. But while in Kairouan of course you will go see it. Not as big as Tunis and others but basically the same idea.

Walked around the medina. Saw many different buildings. Very traditional place. There are some places where prominent people resided but you need historic understanding to appreciate their former dwellings.

Just wander around in the maze of little alleys, with photo opportunities on every corner, but avoid the "instant best friend" touts and the souvenir stores, where you're sure to get fleeced. You do need some tolerance towards garbage and decay, though, to enjoy it.

The medina of Kairouan hosts the original arabic architecture since kairouan is the first islamic town in north africa. A lot of history and typical arabic architecture. Clean and tide, it shiws the strength of the arabic history, culture and knowledge.
