This is definitely not a beginners hike! You have to be fit and prepared to make it back before dark. Start as early as possible: UWA recommends you to be there around 7 am. Take walking sticks (or one of the bamboo sticks they offer at the starting point), good walking shoes, rain gear, lots of water and food for the day. Most people do it in 9-10 hours. Porters are available for 15 USD (or 50000 UGX), and absolutely worth it. They carry your backpack and help you if necessary. Be aware that this is a steep hike, with lots of 'ladders' (made of poles/branches), which requires a lot of good balancing (this gets more tricky when going down with tired legs). We had perfect weather conditions, but if it rains, you get very slippery conditions. All this being said: it is a spectacular hike with stunning views of the Virunga volcanoes, different vegetation zones all the way up to the alpine zone (4000m).

Comfortable trails in the start of the ascent, it gets really steep especially between the first and second hut, easens out a bit towards the summit point. The fantastic view of the crater lake at the top will help you forget the struggle LOL.
Descending is no joke either, best to take a comfortable pace to avoid excessive straining/stressing of the ankles, knees and feet.

Mount Muhavura/muhabura, in my humble opinion is best attempted by individual's with an hiking experience and good fitness level because it demands plenty of effort, yet must be summited in a day.

Drink plenty of water and carry along energy bars, bananas, oranges to help keep you energized during the strenuous hike. Ensure you have a light day pack to avoid excessive weight on your back.

This is a very challenging one day hike as the trail is very steep and depending on the season the weather conditions can seriously affect your experience. The altitude sickness is not a joke and should be taken seriously. You are ascending way over 3000m in one day and the low atmospheric pressure at the top can easily knock you down. If you’re visiting during rainy season you’re guaranteed to experience some heavy rain and slippery tails. Good hiking boots and proper rain gear are must-haves for climbing Muhavura. I didn’t see a lot of fire ants on our path which had been a major issue in other hiking trails in Uganda. However, you can always carry some insect repellents and spray them on your shoes and toes in case you come across some of these annoying ants.
Despite all the challenges, the magnificent Crater Lake at the top and the change in vegetation make the hike absolutely worth it. The Crater Lake is unreal and will make you forget about all the hassle of getting there. The guides are very helpful in making sure that you can reach the summit even though you might be seriously affected with altitude sickness.

Gorilla tracking was difficult but still possible even at 60 years. Just need to stop as climbing at that altitude is the worst. Porters are there to help climbing up and also downwards. the 25 euros are really more than an invest and the best help.

Climbing mt muhavura was a mixed day. I went solo and with a young ranger. We began the climb at 730 and by 10 we had reached the misty covered summit. The small lake in the centre was covered in cloud but it was an easy walk to the other side and into Rwanda. The path was reasonably steep but not too bad. A good day hike!!

A really impressive volcano, it can be seen from miles around and the climb does not disappoint. Unfortunately we set out late (9am) and did not have time to reach the top, so I would recommend to climbers in the future to set off as early as possible in order to maximise your chances! It's at least a 9 hour round trip to the summit.

This one's pretty good.
Before going make sure that the weather is good, or else this is going to be hell. The climb is pretty steep, and muddy trails would be really hard. even when they're not muddy, it's not to easy. at 60$ pp. the value is good, you get to see differnet types of vegetation and experience the serine quiet and beautiful vistas of 1500m and 2000m high above the ground (which is at 2000m, that makes the peak just over 4100m).
Easy to arrange via the UWA offices in Kisoro.

Today, I hiked Mount Muhabura, 4,127 m. I got a lift from my hotel (Muhabura Hotel)'s car. We left the hotel at 6.40. The climb started at 8.00. We parked the car at 2,364 m. The way up was rather easy and spectacular. I didn't stop at all before reaching the summit, 2 hours and 40 minutes later, but I marveled several times at the breathtaking landscapes. A porter carried my backpack. We ate at the top of the mountain, in front of the lake. I shared some biscuits with the soldiers and they took a few pictures of me in front of the lake and in front of the signs (see my pics). It was about 10 degrees at the top. After lunch, we all headed down. At first, it was alright but halfway it became hard. Like some other reviewers have pointed out, to go down that mountain is not a joke! But well, finally, at 13.30, the hike ended. I am fine now (in the evening) and very happy to have done it!
