Having seen the lake from far off while birdwatching in nearby Mgahinga N.P I was interested in the place as a birding spot. Unfortunately I could only manage a short drive by visit , a bit late in the day for the best birdwatching. However, the moment I stepped out of the car at the waterside eco-resort two Otters popped their heads out of the water right in front of the terrace/pier. An African Marsh Harrier flew over and various Kingfishers and reed/papyrus inhabiting warblers and weaver birds abounded. Lovely spot and probably worth staying the night to catch the late evening/early morning activity, perhaps a boat ride would be fun too. Would love to visit again.

After our gorilla trekking we had 1 day to spend in Kisoro and were recommended by other travellers to check out the new tour company Mountain Gorilla Coffee Tours (next door to The Coffeepot). Even though we turned up at 10AM it was still possible to do a tour the same day. We had a great time, starting with canoeing Lake Mutanda (be prepared to peddle yourself as well!), walking in the stunning environment, crossing rural villages with breathtaking views of the lake and volcanos. Then we had a local lunch at the house of a community member, one of the best meals we have had in Uganda. Such a hospitality!
Highlight of the day however, was roasting our own coffee, which was so much fun! We got about 0,5kg of beans to bring home, just the best souvenir.
All in all this was a great and very affordable day!

This is the most beautiful lake of Uganda. The view over the Virunga volcanoes is amazing! The tranquillity, crested cranes soaring over, pied crows shouting and from the top of the hills next to to them a view that you will never forget!
A Must see when in southern Uganda.

Travelled the length of the lake in dug out canoes that had small seats ensuring a reasonable degree of comfort. The lake was beautiful and peaceful with frequent sightings of other boats travelling to market. Sightings of crane and otter enhanced the experience. Highly recommended.

Beautiful lake but sadly very difficult to get to with limited accommodation options. There is a community camp that can be walked to in a couple of hours from Kisoro which is nice and has a jetty which is great for swimming, but this offers limited views which are the best thing about the lake, so you really need to get around to the Nkuringo side of the lake, which gives views across to the three virunga mountains. This takes around 2 hours on a bike from Kisoro on what begins as a very bumpy road.
There is only really one place to stay on the lake at this point which is quite expensive, so its best to come here as a day trip or as a stop over on a trip between Kisoro and the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi forest.
Really is a stunning view though, sunsets are the best time to visit for this, the lake is fine to swim in so you can easily make a day of it from Kisoro.

This is the best activity i have ever done in Uganda. Lake Mutanda is in between Bwindi and Mgahinga national parks in Western Uganda. He i viewed birds and water otters find pictures on my facebook link, late i volunteered at Chihe Primary School with my friend Pier Smith. In afternoon we went for coffee farm tours and it was the best because we mixed up with the natives and later tested cup coffee with we had roasted ourselves. Its a MUST DO ACTIVITY while in Uganda.
We also stayed in the home near lake mutanda which was fun and felt at home. Travel with Mountain Gorilla Coffee Tours for such experience.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST PROFOUND EXPERIENCES YOU CAN EVER ENCOUNTER.
What happens during a nature immersion is that the boundary of where you end and nature begins melts away. You get to experience the one-ness of everything around you. Your sense of self dissolves and you get to tap directly into the wisdom of the creator. You get to touch and be the essence of the real you...

We trekked from the Mgahinga Rest Camp north towards Kisoro. A really amazing trek with great scenery. We were heading for Lake Mutanda and the Lake Mutanda Eco Camp. The lake did not disappoint but we found it difficult getting our heads round the extremely basic facilities at the Eco Camp. As we were already aware that Uganda did not always offer great accommodation we expected little and were not disappointed. The toilets were quite a trek from the camp area and only to be approached in an emergency! My shewee came in very handy! However that aside we took a 2 1/2 hour trip on the lake in dugout canoes and it was absolutely magic. The experience was worth the accommodation! If you are in this part of Uganda I would definitely recommend a trip on the lake to really appreciate how beautiful and close to nature you always are in this amazing country.
