About
This active volcano in Bali, Indonesia, is located at the center of two calderas. Mount Batur, which last erupted in 2000, is located one and a half hours from Ubud by car, and is a popular hiking spot. It’s recommended to make the hour-long climb in the early hours so you can reach the peak in time for sunrise. Just note that visibility may be limited during the rainy season between December and March. Don’t forget to explore Batur’s steaming crater rims and lava fields, or join a tour to enjoy a relaxing soak in a hot spring near Lake Batur. – Tripadvisor

- RSLondon, United Kingdom75 contributionsWonderful sunset, worth the lack of sleep the night beforeThe 1.30am wake-up to start climbing at 3.30am is painful, but very much worth it. It’s approximately a 2 hour climb but best to make it in the dark whilst its coolest. The terrain is road and then rocky/sandy for the rest. The guides will provide flashlights to everyone and that is enough to make it up, feel free to bring your own as well if you prefer. Walking shoes are not a must, but trainers with grip are a minimum. The route down is a lot more sandy and very easy to skid/slip on, that happened multiple times to me. The views from the top at daybreak and then sunrise do make the trek worth it. This is a popular attraction running every day/night, so if taking a tour expect to be in a group of 10+ with 100 or so climbers ascending that very morning.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 27, 2023

- mrc282World9,256 contributionsgorgeous and worth the hikethe hike to mt batur for sunrise is worth it. it is about 1.5h hike each way there are two tracks up and down mt batur that i know off: #1 short and steep, #2 long and gradual. we took #1 while going up and #2 while returning to base. during the hike up, the first section is paved road (but you may bypass it in a vehicle if you know the checkpoint officer), and the second section is volcanic dirt path it was a cloudy and misty day on the day of visit, so sunrise view was non-existent. however, luckily, the mist cleared and everyone up at the ridge cheered. we were rewarded with a gorgeous view of mt agung and abang against the lake backdrop about 15 min after sunrise, floating above a layer of clouds. so dont despair but stay patient if weather is not completely on your side. you will also see volcanic steam vents along the way. there is also an option to visit the hot springs after the hike. we did not do that but instead visited pura segara ulun danu batur. this temple shares a similar setting to pura ulun danu beratan but the temple at beratan is more impressive.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten January 23, 2024
- anittaholeFarsoe, Denmark142 contributionsBeautiful and a good exerciseWe walked with our guide from “balivolcanotrekking” from at around 4 am. It was a steep hike in the dark. When we arrived we had breakfast and waited for the sun. We were very cold even though we brought a sweater. But it was worth every bit! It was so beautiful. Our guide showed us where the gas from the volcano came out and we got to feed a monkey with our leftovers. The hike down was difficult and slippery - we fell several times. The lava pebbles roll when you walk. We wore trainers which was fine. There are a lot of people trying to sell something in your face when you are suffering and struggeling. We understand they have to make money but the peace you wish for combined with the view is not there. Our guide took us up early which we appreciated because there are a lot of people up there and we went in the low season. Bring warm clothes!!Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten February 21, 2024
- Thu Hoang4 contributionsWorth it!! But do not book a guideThe view was breath taking on a clear day and absolutely worth the trek. I notice you do not need a guide for this. I made a mistake of booking a guide, it was so expensive (400k pp) and he was literally in our way the whole time. He was also acting somewhat like a gangster and reeked of bad cigarette smell. He was not even helping us taking photos. Absolutely useless. I saw many people trekking without a guide but do not know how they did it without being stopped by the mountain mafiaVisited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 22, 2024

- Glenn T5 contributionsTough mountain hike but well worth itDid a group tour booked with Get Your Guide - I was picked up in Seminyak at 1:30am for a 2 hour drive to Mount Batur and and then a 2 hour hike to to the top. We were given lamps to wear on our head and walking poles as the ground was quite slippery after some rain. I am a fit and active 68 year old man but have to say the hike was far tougher than I was expecting- the trail is steep in places but after quite a few breaks I made it to the top. The weather wasn’t great with lots of mist and steam from the volcano which hid the sun rise but it was still worth it - it was a great experience and our tour included a visit to the local thermal spa to soak in the warm water afterwardsVisited March 2024Travelled soloWritten April 11, 2024
- concubhair2017Dublin, Ireland146 contributionsMount Batur Sunrise HikeBeautiful scenery but very VERY crowded hike. It’s not too difficult a trek - 3km up and 3km back down, depending on the route taken - and early morning start (2am from Ubud) is worth it. The loose sandy trail can tough at times but the short distance balances it! The journey via private taxi can be painfully slow, the crowds are unavoidable and the chaotic nature of all the various competing “guides” but the smoking crater and awesome views out towards Lombok are fantastic.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 9, 2024
- KIOceanKangaroo Island, Australia85 contributionsStunning, beautiful & challengingWe did the sunrise hike from the bottom carpark. Approx 9km return. Arranged a driver from Amed and a guide for the mountain. I would not trek this by myself or without a guide. There were so many different paths to choose from. Pay the money. It’s a challenging hike and very loose and slippery coming back. The sunrise was absolutely beautiful. I read other reviews about the ‘mafia’ of which I was worried about however i found everyone on the path very kind and accommodating. You’re in Asia - just abide by the rules, and pay the very cheap fee for a guide. I hope to do this again soon. It was a really beautiful and scenic walk. I took my 12 year old daughter and she loved it.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten May 22, 2024

We did this as part of our Honeymoon and we couldn't end up with a better guide.
We had a great experience on our hike with the fantastic guide KARMA! He's careful, safe and will to please. A fantastic guy who's always on the lookout for your safety!
The only negative experience which we've had was with the drier that picked us up from the hotel at 2 am from Kuta Beach because on the way to the Mt. he took a nap while driving. Not the best thing to witness so I made sure to ask him open answer questions this way he doesn't fall asleep again.
Other than than, the whole experience was beautiful and it is a must! You have to make sure you are well equipped when doing it.
Essentials:
1) Light jacket (it is freezy up, and you will be sweaty) in case you do not have one you could rent from them, but it will be 50,000IDK for it
2) Full Pants and you could have shorts underneath
3) Torch / Headlight (but the guide will provide one for you anyways)
4) Water because it is quite expensive on the Mt. (understandable)
5) Good shoes (it is slippery and a HIGH chance of falling)
Also, I would recommend having an extra shirt that you can change in above. In case you do like your sleep, it is recommended to leave for the tour from Ubud rather than Kuta.
All being said, KARMA is the best guy ever and I suggest if you do this to ask for him. He's well worth his pay and I would recommend tipping him at the end because he's not making much on this.
Have fun and stay safe!

I traveled with a group of 4 and climb Mount Batur in July of 2022. We booked through "safebalidriver" who also handled our airport and city transfers. Here is the real review.
We were picked up at our hotel in Ubud promptly at 2:30 am then drove 1.5 hours to the base of the volcano. There were at least 100 other people at base camp with guides. There are basic bathrooms you can use before you climb but you will be charged to use them. Your guide will hand you a flashlight or headlamp then the trek begins. Initially it is flat paved road, then through a field then the real work begins as you walk up loose rocks and boulders. The climb is challenging even for those who trek - trust us. Wearing hiking shoes is a must. We saw folks in chucks and sandals struggling.
Along the way there are rest stops where Balinese women are selling snacks, water, sweaters and blankets. The first summit takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach. The second summit is roughly 45 minutes later. Our guide made boiled eggs, banana sandwiches and got us coffee. Although you'll sweat from the vertical climb, it is cold once you reach the top - like -5 degrees celsius/high 20s Fahrenheit. I brought an extra pullover and was still freezing. We ended up "renting" a blanket from one of the vendors and huddled under it for an hour until sunrise. Don't underestimate how cold it will be up there. I don't eat egg but spent a good while holding a boiled egg to warm my hands. The sunrise is stunning. There are points where it is obscured as the clouds roll by, but it is a beautiful sight.
The way down is treacherous too. The loose rocks make it hard to get secure footing and folks were sliding, although it is doable if you go slowly.
The last part of our tour was a stop at a coffee plantation where you could try a variety of types of coffee and spices. Overall it felt good to have accomplished the trek and gotten to see the sunrise. However, if I knew hot cold I'd be at the top, I wouldn't have done it. If you like a real challenge, have a strong constitution and are well prepared this is the trip for you. If not, I'd stick to a shorter less taxing hike.

A must-do when you're in Bali! We came during March 2020 so there weren't very many people (we were told only 150-200 people compared to the usual 1k+). The hike itself is a bit difficult and slippery due to the small pebbles, but get a good guide and you'll be okay. It's definitely a beautiful experience, but make sure to bring a jacket for the top of the mountain as it gets cold, especially before the sun comes up.

Ive been here like i dont know how many times hahaha, never been bored here. And this is my second review. This mountain's view is amazing! You can see Abang, right in front of you across the lake. Agung is a bit hide at the back of Abang. If you're lucky, you can see the legend Rinjani! Everyday (if lucky) sunrise is beautiful here. If you want to enjoy the scenery without many people here, i highly recommend you to start the hike around 7 / 8 am or sunset time 3/ 4 pm. You can have the top your own :)

Climbing Mount Batur was not on our itinerary, despite a sunrise hike being the most popular thing to do in the area. I'd read up before our trip and the active volcano seemed reasonably challenging to hike and there was always the problem of us not really having the correct footwear or clothing. We decided to enjoy the view from our pool instead, whilst staying for a few days in the local area.

so lucky to have found our guide Bazir who was able to pick us up from our accommodation in north Bali!
booking him was a breeze as he replied really quickly and gave us all the information about the prices and what to bring etc :)
Bazir was really experienced and informative as he lives right at Mt Batur which is where he grew up. i really enjoyed the climb with him as my guide as he constantly reminded us that this is not a competition and we didn’t have to compare our pace to other groups. he also took us on a local route which was much quieter and comfortable for us!
i would highly recommend Bazir as a guide if you are looking for one for your hike up Mt Batur 🙌🏻 contact him on whatsapp at +62 877-6038-1082

Best views are at sunrise, from the peak. To reach the top before the sun, we hiked through the night. To gaze out across the peaks and valleys with the sun's first rays made all that effort worthwhile. During our descent, we made it a point to peek into the still smoldering heart of this volcano.

We didn't expect the temperature to be a low 14c and the area somewhat obscured by a haze. It was still clear enough to enjoy and appreciate the spectacular scenery from various vantage points known to our driver. It is still an active volcano, no tremors felt or rumbles on the day, so it seemed that the gods were happy. Mounty Batur dominates the area, two calderas at its base, the southern caldera contains a lake and the village of Trunyan which is noted for it's unusual custom of laying the deceased on the open ground and covering with cloth and bamboo while they decompose. The surrounding area has changed greatly since we last visited in 1989, I think that I preferred my visit and the rather primitive facilities that existed then .

One of the best excursion of our Indonesia trip. Trekking to Mount Batur to view sunrise was adventurous and super exhausting but it was once in lifetime experience.
We had chosen our anniversary date for the trek and it was the best choice ever made.
Trekking is to Mount Batur requires decent stamina and some tough terrain specially last 4-5 Kms, so be prepared for the same (please note this trek is suitable even for children with 12 years and above but you need to be very careful while climbing)
Once you reach top you will have one of the best views of Sun, Mountain, Clouds and River, its absolute surreal
And the best thing is boiling eggs in the natural heat coming out of holes of this volcanic mountain.
Its highly recommended for trekkers and nature lovers. Ensure lot of water, stick and umbrella (your guide will definitely help but in case your travelling alone)
We had a superb guide for this trek

Highlights of Ubud Tour. Although we didn't do a trek up to the top, we still enjoyed the beautiful view of Mount Batur and Kintamani lake on a bright sunny day. Also enjoyed some local fruits like passionfruit, mangosteen from local shops. Not to be missed attraction on Ubud tour

There’s some pretty places around the lake but the big draw for going there is to go up the volcano for sunset.
You can get part way up on jeep tours if that helps.

(This is google translate)
