Done this 3 times over the years. In my experience the cheapest option is to arrive at the carpark in the caldera by about 4 a.m. where there are many guides (it's all regulated) and if you are lucky you will get a good one...More

Yes- but for safety reason, it's good to go with a tour guide. But if you have experience with trekking, you should be fine. We went with a guide, but there were people who went on their own.

Mt Batur Regular trip; official price for a guide maximum for five guests 5 cost you Rp 400.000, Government tax Rp 100.000/pax. If you paid more than that you are cheated.
