- Elisabeth L1 contributionEnchanting Walk Through Herceg Novi Old TownMy visit to Herceg Novi Old Town was nothing short of enchanting. Nestled along the Adriatic coast, this historic area is a delightful blend of cultural heritage, stunning architecture, and picturesque views. Walking through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, I was immediately struck by its rich history. The well-preserved buildings, dating back to various periods, showcase a mix of Ottoman, Venetian, and Austro-Hungarian influences. Key landmarks like the Clock Tower (Sahat Kula) and Kanli Kula fortress offer fascinating insights into the town’s past. The Old Town is a visual feast with its narrow, winding alleys and charming squares. The stone houses with their red-tiled roofs, vibrant bougainvillea, and lush greenery create a picturesque setting. The St. Michael's Archangel Church, with its beautiful façade and serene interior, is a must-visit.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten July 29, 2024

Parking was easy and cheap. The walks through the narrow streets or along the sea front were beautiful. There is something for everyone with architecture, forts, beaches, sports and shopping. It was popular without feeling too busy. Well worth spending time wondering the area to your hearts content.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 16, 2024
- LovetoEatOut119 contributionsLovely Old TownHerceg-Novi Old Town makes for a lovely walk. The restaurant at the end on the right-hand side approaching the steps to the Clock Tower is where we had the best pizza ever, and discovered Vranac wine, native to Montenegro. Good, fairly upmarket shops, but very reasonable prices.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 15, 2024
- Toni TNashville, Tennessee3,358 contributionsSee the Old and the New in "New Town"This charming town of about 30,000 people includes over 13 distinct ethnic groups. The preserved architecture blessed by Adriatic Sea breezes offers a seaside walk to waterfront or indoor dining, shops, churches, boat rides, and even an on-going wine tasting. So much to do in this savory spot. The place has gone through many name changes over time, and the name that sticks in Herceg-Novi, or "new town." There is so much history and yet so many new food and shop offerings.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten September 30, 2024

Car parking is not allowed on the seafront promenade. Unless you have a mobility scooter (I couldn't locate any hire places anywhere on the Montenegrin coast), you have a significant walk back uphill along the winding road, if you are being pushed in a wheelchair or like me rely on sticks/ 4 wheel stroller. As a result we drove to the seafront for a brief glance and then drove back again. There are payable disabled car parking bays (free on Sunday) just outside the old town

We arrived at this nice town by ship, so we started our sightseeing from the port. I liked tall cacti, huge palm and banana trees. We climbed up lots of stairs to get the charming Old Town. (It’s worth but wear comfty shoes!) Herceg-Novi is from 1382, it was the centre of the salt trade. It has a rich and difficult past. The Old Town was protected two fortresses: Forte Mare and Kanli Kula. In the heart of the Old Town we visited the Clocktower and Kandza fountain, too. We liked walking in this charming town, we will return in the future to spend more time.

Nice old town with 3 fortresses inside in Boka Kotorska Bay. City is famous for its staircases connecting sea promenade with upper town. Nice old houses and atmosphere.
Only thing missing are beaches, they are small and concrete.

We took the public bus to Herceg Novi and walked down to the lovely promenade by the sea. Steps up to the old town, Stari Grad, could have been a bit more obvious. The steps up provide a good workout in the heat. We had to stop half way up for a cool drink. The old town itself is charming and full of history and art. We would love to return and visit some more of the museums.

We have just finished our trip in Balkan Peninsula. Herceg Novi is a nice place to visit to spend an afternoon. We parked our car near Kanli Kula Fortress. The parking method in Herceg Novi is very special as the parking meter do not accept any cash or card. Instead, you can either pay by sending SMS or buying the parking card (Parking Karta) at the nearby newspaper kiosk. We were able to locate the newspaper kiosk by asking the locals. The parking fee is Eur 0.5 per hour. That mean if you need parking for 3 hours. You need to purchase 3 parking cards and show it on the windshield.

The old town of Herceg Novi is a jewell in the crown, perched high above a promenade lined with cafes, bars, restaurants & organised beaches. Much of the old town is built out of beautiful light coloured stone, with pretty houses, courtyards and vistas overlooking lush greenery the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. A large & lively piazza greet you as you walk in from the north & as you ascend the steps & pass through the clock tower, you met by another stunning piazza with a fairytale pretty church and fountain. Narrow laneways & steps leading from this piazza take you up higher fort, with amphitheatre & incredible views or you can follow the narrow cobbled street down towards the sea to another fort, Fort Mare. Full of surprises, narrow cobbled lanes, forts, clock towers, shops, restaurants but unlike Kotor, this feels like a real working town & not completely overrun by tourists.

The old town district of Herceg Novi is surrounded by medieval limestone walls. Narrow cobble streets, tall stone buildings, a fortress overlooking the bay, hidden courtyards, water fountains, clock tower, grand staircase, town square, Savina monastery, St. Jerome's church, the city museum, small cafes, street dining, and family-run shops all invite exploration. The town is much smaller than (nearby) Kotor or Dubrovnik, so it can be explored in a morning or afternoon. It is also much less crowded, which greatly adds to its charm. The upper town offers expansive views over the bay. Descending the streets to the bay-side promenade allows the visitor to swim in the amazingly clear water, enjoy a coffee, admire local artists, eat ice ream or buy souvenirs. Sturdy footwear is advised, as the stone streets and stairs are uneven. The promenade extends to the neighboring town of Igalo, about 2 miles (3km) along an old railroad right-of-way, ideal for walking, jogging, roller blading or bicyling.
