Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple.

The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

This place is well worth a visit in Kandy. Really enjoyed the experience and still well used by locals. We were lucky it was new year and was bustling with activity.

We used a guide and he helped us to go through the whole experience with excellent knowledge of the place and not waiting around for things that might be unnecessary.. on the whole it was good.

I feel spiritually uplifted and so much relief every time I visit. A must visit place for every Buddhist. And you have a strict dress code mind you which is of course a necessity.

Make sure you wear clothes that cover up your legs and shoulders otherwise you won't be allowed in. The guides are expensive and are really not needed as there's plenty of information to read as you go around. You have to pay to have your shoes stored as well as the tourist rates to visit the temple.

There are 3 ceremonies each day, it seems the 6.30pm event is the most popular and spectacular. Thousands of Buddhists line up to bring gifts such as lotus and/or necessities for monks. Make sure your shoulders and legs are covered, you may leave shoes at a secure area at the front. No photos while inside. There are 2 lines inside,... More

Believe it or not we came here by private train as a day trip from Colombo. Incredibly hot but well worth the trip. Beautiful temple if you like Buddhist temples. I enjoyed everything that I saw including the stuffed elephant. I would call Kandy quaint. Clearly the war has taken its toll but if you come to Sr Lanka this... More

This is a must see for anyone visiting kandy. It is a beautiful temple. We went in the evening and it was really busy but looked lovely with all the candles lit outside.
