Overview
More
Formerly known as Pitakande Military Cemetery, it was acquired originally by the military authorities, and was subsequently taken over by the Commission as a permanent war cemetery. Kandy is in central Sri Lanka, 910 metres above sea-level. It is 121 kilometres north-east of Colombo, from which it is easily reached by road. From the Botanical Gardens at Peridenya, take the road to Kandy. Just past the gardens, take a left turning at the roadside direction sign, down Lady Magdalene Drive. The Cemetery is approximately 1.5 kilometres along this road.

This Commonwealth War Cemetery was one of the most beautiful, calm and poignant places I have ever visited. Don't miss it! The words will make you think about what others sacrificed for us. A little piece of history and beautifully maintained.

Our driver introduced us to the gardener who looked after this small but interesting cemetery. Most of the graves are those that were killed when the Japanese bombed Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) in WW2. A very moving place

On a whistlestop tour of the graveyard en route to Kandy to briefly pay our respects to all that perished in WW2. Interesting to know that until this day the British government provides the £ for the upkeep of the site, which is a good...More

This is a very moving place to visit when you wander round the graves and read the names on the headstones. It also gives an insight into some WW2 history. It is beautifully maintained and well worth a visit.

Beautifully maintained and you can read the story of Ceylon relative to this area during the Second World War. There is a caretaker there who is very helpful and will assist you with information (a 200rps tip is appropriate). 32 RAF aircraft were lost here...More

This is on most tours and perhaps worth a quick look. Don't hang about though there are more interesting places to see.

We always try to seek out a CWGC location when abroad and spend a little time reflecting on the names and history associated with them. This one is only small but is, as they always seem to be, very beautifully tended and maintained. We spoke...More

This cemetery is a very peaceful escape from the chaos of central Kandy. It is beautifully looked after. If you are visiting Kandy, then get your tuk tuk driver to take your here. 15 minutes is enough.

Sri Lanka is a busy hectic place. This is not. Usual excellent maintenance expected of these places, and usual man waiting for tip as expected in this country. Only about 270 headstones from the two Japanese air raids, many nationalities. Go if you are close.
