AVOID! A tourist trap and scam. The temple is interesting, and the entrance fee of 200 Rupee per person seems reasonable, but there will be a guide that follows you, and then brings you to a prayer room to be blessed by a monk. After the prayer, they handed you a donation book, stating that the previous groups had donated 5k rupees. We initially gave 100 rupees, then they pressured us to give more. To avoid trouble, we gave 1k for two people.

This is one of four temple gates used in Sri Lanka as part of perahera. It is both a Hindu shrine and a Buddhist temple. There is no scam...donations for being blessed are optional and traditional. If a tout approaches you politely decline. There is charge to have your shoes garded and to borrow a sarong if your in shorts but this is a holy place...not a tourist exhibition. Please respect their culture. I have visited 6 times with friends and family over 4 years and always welcomed as a guest.

Scam! Don’t go in. Exactly like other reviews have outlined. Two monks aided by a tout who gets you to their room where they perform a ceremony and then required substantial amount of money that is very hard to resist and happens all before you realise what is going on. Abusing their status and not the real Sri Lanka. Don’t go!

Tourist Scam- Has nothing to do with a spiritual Place!

Warning! This Place of shame is nothing but a Tourist Scam. Avoid this place as a Tourist! You might get tricked for the first time when you have to Turn Off your shoes at the counter (what you maybe could accept as a european tourist, because that might Costs you a few rs more compared top the price in the "official Ticket" (people from Here pay nothing) but is very poor for a Wannabe Spiritual place). After that you'll come together with two unscrupulous wannabe monchs (you have No choice ) using a cheap Photo with the Dalai Lama for their Scam. Although we didnt want to have contact with This creepy Wannabe monchs in their typical monchs Outfits so that it Looks real, youre getting forced to a poor ceremony with Them. This we let Happen to Not to disrespect Something religious (of course IT was not- it was just a Play of cheap unscrupulous men). After that they gave us a book and forced us to "donate" Like described from Other people. The amounts in the book are very high for Sri Lanka Like 5000 rs and more ( we didnt "donated" that much what brought us into some further discussions with the "Dollar monchs").

Regret that I have been at this (scam) temple

Rather a small temple and not much of carvings to give you the oohhhs and aahhs. Still should visit when you are in town. Anyway, visiting this place requires you to pay SL 100 rupees as tourist fees.

Scam! They will lead you around and take your money. Don't go there. There are nicer temples, go there.

This is a must visit place for Hindus. Its a very small & beautiful ancient temple. The shrine is small so please expect some waiting if you go when its crowded. You can't see the main deity (Murugan / Kataragama) but you can be inside the shrine. The main deity will be closed with curtains but the priest will do archanas/pooja for you and get you the prasads. People can only see the main deity only once a year.

I is a very beautiful ancient temple. It is small but peaceful. We had a guided tour of the history of the temple and it was interesting.. One of the must visit places when in Kandy. The entrance is small and one could miss it.
