This middle ages kingdom presents some wonderful building ruins and three most impressive Buddhas carved on the side of a bluff -- one sitting, one standing, and one reclining. The quality of the carving is excellent.

We visited this place on our 16 day tour through Sri Lanka. Although we have visited Yapahuwa as well I must admit that this place is far more impressive. The area is very wide spread and offers different temples, ponds, houses and Buddha statues from this period. Of course it strongly reminds on the locations of the Indiana Jones movies... More

Many reviewers have complained about the US$25 entrance fee, but don't be deterred by these reviews. The complex of ruins and ancient structures are well worth the entrance fee. People spend $1500 or $2000 or more to travel to Sri Lanka and then complain about $25 fee to see world-class archeological treasures... come on! Start your tour at the museum,... More

I really liked this historical centre. We visited mid-week on rather a dull day and therefore it was very quiet, with easy access to the various ruins. Within the inner citadel there are the very impressive remains of the royal palace, but the whole area is littered with well-preserved ruins that still give a good idea of what they must... More

I did it walking. Might be a bit tiring, but totally possible to watch everything in one day. Well, I have to admit that it was a bit annoying and irritating that there is nothing written anywhere, in booklet you get in the museum, not a single sign anywhere, and only after entering or right before entering the sacred area... An incredible multi-acre ruins of temples, palaces, and other ruins. It all starts at the museum where you purchase ticket for the complex, but do not waste time at the free movie - which takes over 40 minutes and is told in a monotone in the most boring manner possible.

This is truly an amazing city. The museum is ok but the main part is the city itself, get a bicycle and pedal your way through the streets so you can stop when you want and just enjoy the area.

It's amazing place to get knowledge about culture, history, religion, society development . It must be a fascinating city at it's blooming period. We started with a guided tour at museum and then continued through the ruins. It took as 1/2 day to get around, eventhough we were with a car. Entering to the temples are without shoes. P.S.Monkeys are... More

$25 USD per person doesn't get you a bike or even a map. The ruins are pretty interesting but most of them have been remade with bricks that have beautiful green moss growing on them. Not sure how authentic this is. The individual areas are quick to visit which is good for avoiding long exposure to the sun but bad... More
