Recently visited Sri Lanka and spent a morning (3.5hours) exploring the ancient city at Polonnaruwa. We arrived earlyish ~9:00 and had a driver who took us around the site. It is expensive but well worth a visit!! 1) The museum - lots of site information...More

Polonnaruwa was my favourite site in the cultural centre of Sri Lanka. It was extremely hot so it’s best to make an early start to see as much as you can before it gets too hot. The whole area is very beautiful with many ruined...More

Wonderful complex of ruins. World class sites in a glorious green park. We much preferred our day at Polonnaruwa, mainly for the greater sense of atmosphere and solitude, and wealth of detailed beautiful sites. In my view a bike is unnecessary, as long as you...More

The best way to visit the ruins is certainly by bicycle. Time visit of the site: approx. 3h. Entrance fee: 3750LKR ($25) for 1 day only. You buy the ticket at the museum (beside the canal). It is very expensive if you compare with the...More

Extensive ruins, covering HUGE area. We walked but we saw bicycles which was a good idea. Take it slow and stay hydrated. Amazing ruins and kilometers of old brick lined roads.

We hired some bikes and rode around the ruins and temples. The entry fee as always was quite expensive. You need to cover your knees and shoulders and remove footwear at each temple. The scale of Polonnaruwa is incredible, it's truly massive. I recommend doing...More

This is a truly amazing place to visit. It does get very hot and is busy. Consider footwear that can be removed quickly and dress in a manner which is respectful of a sacred place. We thought it was value for money and really enjoyed...More

We spent a day going around the sites which was interesting but, to be honest, I thought the sites at Anuradhapura were more impressive. We wanted to do both and am glad that we did but I thought these weren't as good.

The area has an incredible history and some of the sites are absolutely stunning. However, the 35 USD entrance fee makes for an expensive outing. We biked through which was slightly spoiled by the number of trucks and cars on the same road. Note that...More

The entrance fee is paid at the Museum entrance, so their ticket counter serves the whole area. Usually the tickets are dated, and then stamped on the various points of interest, so I am not really sure if they can provide... More
