Please Please be aware there are bad people that will miss advise you at this train station and tell you your tickets are not valid.
1st: Near Security someone will look at your ticket and will tell you that your ticket is incorrect and advise you to go to a irtc outlet to exchange it for the correct ticket. They will even offer to put you in a government taxi. He will assure you that you have plenty of time to get back.
2nd: They will stall you in the office and then tell you the train has been cancelled. They will even arrange a phone call to have someone tell you that the train was cancelled a couple of hours earlier.
It is at this point that they will then help you arrange a car and driver for you at quite a price. Unfortunately at this point in time your choices are limited as they have stalled you long enough to have missed the train. He even pretended to ring our next hotel and let them know that we no longer required a driver to pick us up at the station.
Upon arrival at the hotel we soon realised that the drivers were still waiting for us at Agra Cant Station and that in fact the train had not been cancelled.
Our driver was lovely and the Manager of the hotel was able to through the driver follow the trail and we were able to retrieve quite a portion of our payment. We were lucky.. Please don't let this happen to you.

I'd heard all sorts of horror stories about New Delhi train station and was expecting to either be crushed in the crowds or scammed at every turn. The truth is neither happened. The station is obviously busy and everything that comes with that but, despite being a very obvious foreign tourists complete with giant backpacks, we weren't hassled at all beyond a few people asking if we needed a taxi. Maybe we just got lucky but I didn't see anything dodgy going on. There was a massive queue to get through security at the main entrance in the middle of the station but there are smaller entrance halls at the left and right of the building which we walked straight through so it's worth checking these if you want to skip the lines. The only thing is these smaller entrance halls don't have the boards telling you the departure platforms so you may need to check in the main entrance hall first. Once you know your platform, everything is clearly signposted in English and Hindi so it's pretty easy to find where you need to go. It certainly isn't the cleanest or most modern train station in the world but you're only passing through so I don't think it matters that much. One thing I would say though is don't wear sandals or flip flops. I was slipping and sliding in puddles of who knows what so I was glad to be wearing trainers!

It's hot, it's noisy, it's chaotic, it's India!! But a tourist attraction it is not. We approached our first encounter with New Delhi Railway Station with trepidation but, as long as you keep your wits about, keep an eye on your luggage at all times and keep saying "no" to all the touts and scammers you should pass through without too much bother. It's a massive station but, fortunately, the electronic platform indicators work and show their information in both English and Indian. As a 'tourist attraction' the marking is one but for an experience (and thrill) never to be forgotten, the marking is four.

There were two guys with moustache, surely staff, who were checking their cell phones all the time, speaking on loudspeaker, cracking jokes and disturbed paying guests. Such a shame for a great lounge. Managers, give that young lady a raise and punish those guys with moustache.

Delhi Central Station represents a formidable challenge for any commuter. Having lost a connection we needed a new ticket, but if you naively think that it is enough to go to a ticket office, it is because you have not yet realized the incredible chaos that reigns in this microcosm. The Delhi station is closer to Dantesque Hell than to a normal place of production of customer services. By a circuitous route, that is to say going through the cancellation counter, we managed (because foreigners I suppose) to obtain the ticket with seat reservation, otherwise it would probably have been mission impossible. Moreover, it seems likely that this particular place is in the image of the country and that it illustrates the present state of the immense transformations to be accomplished to achieve the vision of the future illustrated by the neighboring metro station connecting the railway station to the 'airport

For short stays between connecting trains the executive lounge on the First floor is the best option. Neat clean well managed with a buffet available as well as tea/coffee and other snacks on payment. There a couple of Rest rooms with beds where one can choose to rest by paying a little extra. Otherwise there is comfortable seating with charging points with each sofa. Clean washrooms are also available. Charges are by the hour.

This station has a lot of platforms and it is very big. It will take some time to reach from 1st platform to 16th platform. And it is very crowded. You need to come some time before to reach to a platform where your train will arrive. Overall cleanliness is not too bad, but it can still improve. There are enough retiring rooms available there. There is good amount of security check also, so there is a big line everytime there. So, you need to arrive there before time.

New Delhi Railway Station is a well-managed railway system. First of all, you can do the bookings online. Second of all, you can see where you are, what is the next station, etc also through an online app or website just by typing your number. you are mostly next to a friendly neighbor. Although it can get pretty uncomfortable and tedious at times when traveling but overall a good experience.

We, me and my wife, have availed the services at the New Delhi Railway Station Rest Rooms on four occasions.
1. The Rest Rooms are located on
a. Pahargunj Side corresponding to Platform No. 1
b. Ajmeri Gate Side corresponding to Platform No. 16
2. Booking can be done on-line. You have to have a valid PNR to avail this facility. Or, you can get a booking at Counter No. 58 on Platform No. 1 with a valid ticket.
3. Booking can be done for 12 hrs and 24 hrs stays normally. 48 hrs can be done on special request. Rates are provided on the website.
4. I have stayed on the Ajmeri Gate Side accommodation, so I can detail on the facilities of this side only. This is on the 2nd floor and has accessibility by lift from the ground floor. I do not expect the facilities will be any different on the Pahargunj side.
5. There are essentially three types of rooms - dormitory, two bedded with air conditioner and two bedded without air conditioner.
6. I have used a two bedded with air conditioned room on four occasions.
a. It is a pretty large room with a double bed.
b. The pillows are inadequately thick. One has to use the blanket (2 blankets are provided) to obtain some respectable height, i.e. if you do not have the use of the blanket. Like wise the mattresses are okay - thin but bearable
c.The air conditioners are very good in some rooms and not so good in some. Two large fans have been provided - so it is not all that bad.
d. Water heaters have been provided in the bathroom, which also has a western style commode. The bath room is very large. Only one clean towel is provided per couple - if you ask for it. Unfortunately, the bathrooms are ill maintained, though hygienically clean.
e. There is a dressing table with mirror and tool, wardrobe, a centre table along with two chairs in the room also.
f. Food is not available. On going down to the 1st floor, you can purchase snacks - but no square meal.
g. For a square meal you have to go outside the station. The alternatives are not so rosy on the Ajmeri Gate side, though it appears there are quite a few eating spots on the Pahargunj side. However, we found a very agreeable and good restaurant on the Ajmeri Gate Side - GINGER RAIL YATRI NIWAS. It is visible, to the left of the exit from Ajmeri Gate side, i.e. platform number 16. The food is cooked fresh, served warm, delicious and pocket friendly.
In spite of the negative comments I still feel that this facility is very handy as one does not have to leave the station and living conditions, though not comparable to any star hotels, are still clean and acceptable for the expense incurred.

Cloakrooms in Delhi provided by GoLuggageFree
'I have recently come across a useful service in Delhi called GoLuggageFree that is trying to help travelers by providing cloakrooms throughout the city. They tie up with popular stores and hotels that have unused space and can store one's bag safely. I think this is a lifesaver for people spending a few hours in the city and have no option to keep their luggage. It would be great if someone could throw some light about their experience with the service.

I have used this service at NDLS Station(Paharganj side). It's pretty cheap and convenient. The staff was professional and handled my luggage safely. Would highly recommend GoLuggageFree.
