- ranjeet K6 contributionsDense market for everythingThis is an amazing huge market, especially for wholesalers but also for people like me. Sachan Tours had arranged a special walk for us through the masala market, Fatehpuri mosque, and in several gullies where things are sold pretty cheap. One can not walk in the spice market without a mask because of the strong smell of spices, but it's worth seeing. We even bought some spices a bit of dry fruits. If you are in Delhi, it must be visited.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 9, 2023

This time we visited Favwara Chowk and have Fruit Cream just outside the Gurudwara. Delicious sweet taste that you will always remember for years to come. You can drive your car after 9pm in Chandni Chowk. Chandni Chowk is redeveloped few years back.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten December 1, 2023
- Laura V3 contributionsSo many stalls but for goodness sake don't go alone if you're a woman.I have never felt so unsafe. As a white woman (dressed modestly) I was followed and stared at (I expected the staring), people tried to grab my bag, people kept trying to touch me or rub against me, the men offering the bike tours just kept riding next to me even when I both politely and firmly said I wanted to walk. My husband was with me and speaks Hindi and said they were making comments about me also. At one point when people wouldn't stop following me through alleys of shops I went inside a temple just to be able to breathe and relax for a minute. It's a shame, because in terms of the stalls I could have spent all day there and I don't want to go to a country and watch the culture from the sidelines, but to be honest I couldn't wait to leave and never go back.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten December 19, 2023
- Sonya BPompano Beach, Florida77 contributionsNew Delhi is not enoughNew Delhi, in my view is an elitist city, home to Prime Minister Modi & government buildings. The best of New Delhi aside from the historical sites & monuments, is the home & gardens where Ghandi spent his last days which is definitely worth a couple of hours. It is a truly spiritual place. However, most impactful part will be venturing into the central part of Delhi. You must experience the traffic, the throngs of people, the food stalls, the colors. Foremost, I will never forget our visit to the beautiful Sikh Temple & community kitchen where anyone can volunteer to help cook. They feed approximatley 40,000 people per day. We were warmly welcomed & invited to help prepare roti. Whoever is sitting next to you will guide you. You can come just to eat dal & roti with thousands of others. No questions are asked. Hopefully you will learn about Sikhism. If you have more than a few days, travel, travel, travel. India & its people are a remarkable melting pot of cultural diversity. A smile & "namaste" is always graciously returned.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten December 30, 2023
- Abovetheclouds2,240 contributionsDon't go alone. Very busy. Cool atmosphere. Carry as little as possible. All I say is 'This is India'. Do not go alone. I was a female solo traveller. I had a guide with me. It is beyond busy, people are tightly packed together. I didn't even take a bag. Just carry small change in a pocket. Much safer. I got a little nervous in some parts as people were pushing and it was really busy. I enjoyed the atmosphere and browsing the many shops from clothing to spices, electronics, food and more. Vendors can be pushy. We went on a Saturday afternoon, early evening. It was lovely as the area became dark and the lights came on. Cool atmosphere. There is a metro station nearby but we took an uber. Just take into account, if you book an uber, you can wait up to forty minutes with the traffic! Try and walk down some of the small alleys. You will find beautiful old buildings and 'traditional life'.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten January 6, 2024
- Renan226 contributionsMake sure you go to the spice marketYou have to love chaos and people to appreciate this place. This is where they organise street food tours so a lot of places serve safe food for non-Indians bellies. There is a section called the spice market (you'll have to make your way inside a building called Gadodia Market), the air is full of spice smell. Although not odorant, it's very agressive and makes you cough / sneeze after only 3 min. Very unique and something you surely won't find in many places.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten January 22, 2024

If you’re looking for something figure out where it is as everything has its own blocks. Bargain for deals and wear close toed durable shoes. Hire a rickshaw driver to get around. - Meet Doshi DDubai, United Arab Emirates182 contributionsHustling bustling tiny lanes full of lifeNarrow busy bustling lanes in the center of the city. Great places to eat. It's an experience to walk through those extremely narrow busy lanes of chandni chows. It was the Pulse of whole sale and retail trade and had some amazing places to eat. Must have Daulat ki chaat and Parathas at paratha gully.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten March 3, 2024
- TC6217Burlington, Vermont164 contributionsCrowds and Chaos of DelhiA bustling market where you buy just about anything. Crowds and chaos and just about every smell you can imagine, from spices and tea shops to...well, not so pleasant smells. It's an interesting perspective into the old "heyday' of Delhi. Rickshaws and Cows all over the area and the lanes are tiny and narrow. If you're not someone that likes crowds and congestion, this is not the place for you. If you're into history, it's worth checking out at least once. For me, once was enough and I'll probably never make it back. Would have liked to see it back in the 60's. Today, it's just way overcrowded and hasn't been able to keep up. Lots of construction and lack of infrastructure to help keep the area clean.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten March 9, 2024

The hustle and bustle of the area and livelyness of the crowd makes it a desirable place for visitors visit first time
or even a repeat visit. Souvenirs that you would like to bring with you as a gift 🎁 to friends and relatives are available at a very reasonable price. The people are friendly.

I was often told multiple times I needed to check out Chandni Chowk but to be honest it just gave me anxiety. The streets are very narrow, it’s extremely busy and hard to navigate around.
My best advice is if you’re going to this area to definitely go with a tour company because venturing out by yourself is overwhelming. Our rickshaw driver was friendly and thankfully helped us get around.

One of the most famous markets of India located in the heart of old Delhi, this place hardly retains any of the charm that it was historically supposed to possess. While it may be romantic for foreigners to get a glimpse of the crowd and chaos of India, the truth is that it is super congested and crumbling with roadworks adding to the confusion. The crowd may be too suffocating in the narrow lanes with drooping overhead wires and no clear exit ways in case of emergencies. Even the by-lanes close to the metro stations are poorly lit.
It is next to impossible to enjoy anything with knowledgeable local guides are most of the people working in the area are clueless about the historical places in the area.
Best visited during the daytime for the many historic buildings that are located in the area like Ghalib's haveli, the town hall etc. The closest Metro train station is Chandni Chowk on the Yellow Line and Lal Quila on the Heritage Line.

If you go in there expecting glamorous old world heritage and charm, you might be disappointed, but if you go in with a list of specific things to do (Parathewali Gali, spice market, etc), you'll have a great time. You can visit the Red Fort and Jama Masjid the same day as well. Would not recommend going there during the summer or monsoon months, winter and spring are the best times as it will always be super crowded (don't expect air conditioning if you're planning to eat at Chandni Chowk)!

We experienced an amazing rikshaw ride on our recent visit to Delhi. This is something you really must do. Your driver will manoeuvre his rikshaw through tiny lanes crammed full of shops, people, motorbikes and so much more. It’s an experience never to be forgotten. So many items for sale in the many colourful alleys including jewellery, books, stationery, wedding flowers and gifts and so much more. Go and immerse yourself.

We came here on a street food tour and it felt like the real Delhi.
Very busy, almost chaotic, we got some really nice food to sample.
Our tour didn't end until 8pm and dark. I would recommend if you're coming here to do so in daylight as it felt quite intimidating at night, especially or tuk tuk ride home with large groups of males, some who were fighting.
If you want to see a real insight into real Delhi, this is the place to go

What an adventure! We came to India to experience the chaos of colour, smell, and the crowd that we have heard so much about. Going to Chandni Chowk in the evening is the best place to do that, and it blew our expectations. This food tour is much more than what we have expected.
Anubhav as our guide, and without us knowing, he is like a local celebrity here where we kept encountering people coming up to say hi and took photos with him. We were in good hands, where he brought us all over Chandni Chowk, the spice market, visiting the small food shops and street food stores, local restaurants, going in and out of little alleys while explaining to us every little things that we need to know with knowledge and passion. And he only brought us to places where the food were safe for foreigners like us to consume.
The market is a very chaotic place, and we would not be able to make sense out of it. We join this tour expecting to sample some local street food, but we got a lot more out of it. It is a glimpse into the life of the local people too. Highly recommended.

What a fascinating, reckless and bonecrunching white knuckle ride through the narrow streets of this seemingly endless market where apparently you can just about get anything there. The speed that the electric rickshaw driver goes through these narrow streets and always manages to avoid running people down or just missing an equally crazy driver coming from the opposite direction is amazing.
Very colourful and exciting !!

Loved the view of Red Fort, Sheesh gunj gurdwara and old historical havelis around the Chandni Chowk main bazaar area and tasted some delightful and novel dishes like kulle ki chaat, daulat ki chaat, nihari and other meat dishes of old Delhi. Some families still source their monthly spices from the old suppliers here. Fantastic outlets for getting your wedding trouseau shopping completed can be found around Kinari bazaar that suit your budget and desire for designer pieces, as well as one can buy unique silver jewelry and corporate gifts from an abundance of traders. However it is also a very congested area, which is heavily crowded, so much that only a single person can walk sideways in the narrow lanes - so hard to get in your vehicle there. You need to know which shops to go to else, a lot of time will get wasted browsing and bargaining. It is well serviced by erickshaws, metro stations and hand pulled rickshaws. I enjoyed doing a walking food tour there in October 2019 with a local guide, who also shared historical information about local buildings.

So if you are a foodie , esp. ethnic/desi North Indian /Mughlai food and do not have Agoraphobia and are ready to rub shoulders with anyone and every one , the place is for you , for sure . You get amazing variety of clothes , toys , books , stationery , spices , dry fruits and even rare stuff like Camera lenses here at relatively cheaper prices . In nutshell , shopping could be really worth it here if you have to buy in bulk . Is a good place for pre wedding shopping . Remember to leave the car out side , somewhere near Red fort and either walk down or take the e Rickshaw . Explore lanes and by lanes , some of which carry remnants of past with relics of old havelis and temples etc.

Will Chandigarh Chowk be open on 1 January 2024?

Roughly how much should I pay for a rickshaw ride? Also, hoe much can you barter with the stall holders? Should you knock off a third or 50% etc?
Written October 5, 2019
For riksha/auto ride - It depends on distance roughly for first 2 kms the price is Rs. 30 approx and after 2 km, the charges are Rs. 9 per km.
You can bargain upto 30-40% but few shops have fixed price.
