We visited this place to see a huge variety of fishes but unfortunately the number of fishes has decreased and the tanks are also no very clean as they should be. The information near the fish tanks are not readable, they’ve pasted papers which has information. Expecting that they take entry fees of Rs.60, everyone expects the place to be more good and informative; we would mind the fees to increase and get to see even more variety and not only empty tanks.
The place is located right opposite to Marine lines and the nearest railway station is Charni Road or Marines line.

I had been to this lovely aquarium in 1965. Now, one would have expected it to have improved tremendously, but I was very disappointed to see that it was not being maintained and was rather shoddy. The entrance ticket was Rs 60/- only. Being a Sunday, there was a fair crowd.
The first thing that struck me was the dirty glass. Then there were several empty glass containers. Then, the ugly manner in which the data of the fish was stuck on the walls. Several fish did not have anything written about them. There was nobody to guide us nor were the video screens working.
On the whole, though it there are a wide variety of sea fish, it was not worth a visit because of the poor maintenance. The Fisheries Department really needs to improve its show.

Worst aquarium ever visited - I was very excited to show my son one of the only aquariums in mumbai and when we visited there the person at ticket window was rude and asked for exact change . When we entered the lights were very dim - the tanks were dirty with water not clean you can hardly see the fishes - we were done and out in less that 10 mins . The place was stinky and dusty felt like not cleaned in months . We wanted to use the restroom and there was water clogged on the way to rest room ( more than 100 mosquitos ) and we had to walk on the bricks to visit the washroom . The washroom were not clean and stinky. In the middle of heart of mumbai it’s a shame they can’t maintain an aquarium. Please don’t visit especially if you have visited aquarium any where else in the world you will never appreciate this place. Total waste of time

Waste of money and time here. Nothing to see. You will get bored by seeing dirty tanks in which all the fishes are kept.

Mumbai is a world class city but sadly it lacks a world class aquarium like the ones in Bangkok or Singapore. We had recently visited the Taraporevala Aquarium in Marine Drive during our Christmas vacation and it was an average experience. The Aquarium has been recently renovated and tickets are priced higher than before (60 rupees per person) but some of the enclosure inside the aquarium was empty. We liked the alligator fish, eel, tortoises, star fish and stingrays but nothing much to get excited.

The aquarium is its only kind in Mumbai, though there are few private ones too. This is been managed by the BMC. Recently renovated, its a very small aquarium, which you can see within 20 minutes if you take a leisurely walk around it. If we compare it to other aquariums across the world its nowhere near. Looking at the budgets that BMC has, it should have been better.

I have visited multiple aquariums in India, this one was the best till date. Big clean water tanks displaying a variety of underwater creatures. It is a must visit site for Mumbai travellers.

Is luggage allowed inside the aquarium? Or is there any place to keep our luggage while goin to visit the aquarium?
Ashwin Kumar R
Chennai (Madras), India93 contributions
There is no place to keep the luggage. You may request at the ticket counter. But not sure of safety.
Not sure if they allow luggage inside. But it could be crowded esp on weekends, so better not carry luggage.
Any way there isn;;t much to see, it is not worth seeing while lugging your suitcases and bags.

Hello Madhu,
Sorry for the late response, just saw your message. Monica has covered most of the places near Marine Drive. Just to add the Hanging Gardens (Kamla Nehru Park) at Malabar Hill and if you are early, try visiting the Elephanta Caves. You will have to take a ferry from the Gateway of India for a small fee per person. For restaurants, try Shalimar near J J Hospital if you are a non-vegetarian or Panchavati Gaurav Restaurant near Marine Lines for an awesome veg thali meal. Hope you've fun in Mumbai.
Suhail :)
