This is the head quarters of the Mumbai Post office. The structure is huge and there are 3 to 4 gates thru which you can enter this building. this is a stone building around 150- 200 years old. It can be maintained much better.

Pretty close to the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (earlier known as Victoria Terminus) is this beautiful architectural marvel located. For the last 2 years it’s under renovations which is expected to get over in 3 years time (this was much needed). This institution has many educational learning to showcase and tickle the young minds. Adults or kids with interest in philately should visit the philately department and know about the rich heritage of all the stamps issued. The philately department also has a special offering of getting personalized stamps at a nominal cost. You can mark it as one of your vacation activity for the kids.

The Mumbai G.P.O is a functioning and major post office in Mumbai that was built in the latter stages of the British Empire. Although built by a British architect, John Begg, there's no obvious European influence on the design. It is an excellent example of Indo-Islamic style of the various Islamic empires of the Indian subcontinent. The building is so good looking, it could pass for a palace.

Inside, the GPO is huge for a post office and one of the reasons is the many facilities that are still conducted in this post office, banking, mail and stamped related shopping etc. The layout of the interior is quite old fashioned from a westerners point of view, but retains a lot of old world charm.

It’s worth a small detour in old Mumbai to see this grand building.

1. the building itself is beautiful

2. when you are inside you feel like you have stepped back in time and

3. if you have time you can get a MYSTAMP made. They put a photo of you on a real stamp ~ so you can stick yourself onto a post card, post if from the GPO and amuse your friends and family ~ they also make for a unique, inexpensive and personal souvenir. Great idea!

This is a good place to send a parcel to the UK from. Other post offices in Mumbai I tried could not cope with it as in the admin. Opposite the entrance are several tailors as you need to wrap your parcel in cloth. I arrived with a cardboard box very well taped up but they would not accept that. Which is crazy as every parcel gets opened by customs. Anyway the actual building is as I say like stepping back to colonial times. A cool and calm place in the centre of Mumbai
