An insightful frenetic raw look at life in a temple. Beware being grabbed by someone as soon as you get in who insists on taking you round in a frenetic and harrassed manner then asking you to donate 45000 rupees and when you say you don't have it he is none to pleased and you feel you have to flee... Kalighat is full of pilgrims throughout the year. It opens at 4 am in the morning and closes around 9 to 10 pm at night. Outside the temple you will see shops selling flowers and other customary things for the special prayer. You have get inside bare footed to see the goddess kali's sculpture. Don't be fooled by the looks... More

Protect your kids - they'll end up on the floor. It's a real assault on the senses - scents, sights and sounds all make for an unexpected overwhelming experience. About a hundred people crammed into... More

Its very popular and very crowded. People around tries to take good advantage of foreigners to take money from them. Need to be extremely careful as lots of cheaters are around.

My kalighat memories have to do with crazy crowds, even more the pandas and dirt all around. Having visited crystal clean temples in the south for years it is hard to step in these kind of places unless the religious call supersedes all these angles. I have noticed th at all tourists to kolkata head here and belur, dakshineshwar etc.... More

I visited the place in July 2014. Unfortunately, it is very dirty and very crowded. That place is full of people asking for money for the Temple!
