On every winter visit to Kolkata, Academy ( shortened name) is a must for watching Bengali plays. This winter we were there twice and enjoyed the plays. However, the owner needs to improve the auditorium, especially the rickety chairs and the wash rooms.

Bengal has been a State where Art is nurtured by the artists. This Academy is the best destination for young artists to display their work for the visitors and tourists. Through out the year many exhibitions are held and one can see and appreciate the work of different artists. A must visit attraction.

The exhibitions on show on the ground floor change regularly, it appears, meaning that quality can also vary. During my visit, I saw a few excellent exhibitions on the ground floor, but a rather unimpressive exhibition on the first floor.

All budding artists in Kolkata dream of holding an exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts, cause this is the best place to set footprints in the art world. Exhibitions are held round the year here, There is also a medium capacity auditorium where contemporary theatre groups stage their plays.

Located near the Victoria Memorial, the Academy of Fine Arts in the city of Kolkata is the place that contains excellent specimens of fine arts and one of the best collections in the entire country and the world.

There are the general and Rabindra Mandap gallery. While the former is opened from 3PM to 8 PM daily, the Rabindra Mandap remains open from 12 PM to 6 PM every day.

The Academy was established in 1933 by Lady Ranu Mukherjee and has an impressive collection of miniature paintings, fine arts, and sculptures. Exhibitions by contemporary artists are also held regularly here.

Rabindra gallery contains personal belongings of famous poet Rabindranath Tagore. Highlight of the academy are the eight galleries in the ground floor, the largest in India.

Situated in Kolkata's prime cultural zone Academy of Fine Arts comprises of six galleries where art exhibitions are organized regularly. This apart there's a small auditorium too and if you're a serious theater-lover you may watch plays here everyday in the evening. Virtually, Academy can be defined as "The Off-Broadway of Kolkata". Besides, for refreshment you will have a cheap canteen and a small garden-restaurant inside the premises. Presently, an open air stage named "Ranuchchhaya Mancha" has been founded in front of Academy. And around it this area, as if, is developing as a little version of Hyde Park of London gradually. Around Academy there exist St. Paul's Cathedral Church, Mohorkunjo - the park with musical fountain and open air theater, Rabindra Sadan - Kolkata's most prestigious auditorium, Sisir Mancha - a small theater hall, Bangla Academy - the center for the cultivation of Bengali language and literature and above all Nandan - the film complex. You must visit these places also while visiting Academy.
