Visiting Olinda, one cannot miss at least a short visit to traditional "Mercado da Ribeira". It is erroneously mistaken as an old "slave market", but it has been in fact, since the 17th century, a groceries market and, only in the 1960s, it became a handicrafts center. The former grocery small shops were converted and a very attractive handicrafts center is today part of Olinda's tourist circuit. A nice variety of items and prices, make "Mercado da Ribeira" a lovely place for buying small souvenir gifts to take home. Depending on how many items you are buying, some haggling may be successful, at least for getting small discounts. Enjoy!

Checked out the market during the day - fantastic variety of fresh fish, meat, fruit and vegetables. Returned later that evening for a meal - presunto to start massive bbq’d king prawn and calamari to follow - delish but prawn a bit pricy - wine by the glass.
