About
Paço do Frevo is a cultural resource center that gathers actions, projects and activities to enhance, protect, promote and convey frevo, a leading national tradition, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Paço do Frevo is a public space for the diffusion, research, leisure, formation and support of frevo's music and dance, with the goal of spreading its practice through the future generations. It's a place to contemplate, study, create and experiment. We have built a popular and democratic environment where people can meet, learn, and discover the energy and vitality of frevo, an artistic expression that aggregates both the collective momentum and personal transgression. In this renovated building that combines preservation and modernization, you will find a whirlwind of images and emotions. A state of mind. A rich, complex and dynamic system of artistic expressions, traditions and crafts related to the Pernambuco and Brazilian popular celebrations.

The place is completely amazing. You can understand the history and the culture of people. It is unbelievable to have something like this. The Local is very well organized. We had free ticket on Tuesday. You can dance and learn how to do it. Interact with place.

What a great exhibition of this folk dance art. The evening we went, a band was playing on the top floor and dancers were showing their moves. Interesting, creative exhibits, stimulating pictures, colors and textures. Love the entry hall decor and videos. Visit this neighborhood and walk around to see the historic buildings. It is so great to see a building being reused for a contemporary function like this museum.

When the word "Frevo" is mentioned in Brazil, one immediately thinks about Recife! This beautiful town is the birthplace of "Frevo", a very traditional Brazilian style of music and dance, mostly heard and seen during Carnival festivities. And Recife created, at the former premises of the "British Western Telegraph Company" (a neo classic building dated of 1908), the "Paço do Frevo": a museum envisaged to protect and promote this Unesco's appointed "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity". It is a beautiful museum, with a creative and colorful scenography, and a must-see at any visit to Recife. But I think it may be more interesting for Brazilians, that grew up hearing "Frevo" and watching (or even practicing) its quite difficult and acrobatic choreography. There are scheduled rehearsals, when dancers and musicians are performing live their incredible art! Check schedules before going. "Paço do Frevo" honors an important segment of Brazilian traditional culture! Enjoy!

This is a small museum that tells the story of the Frevo, one of the main regional dances of Recife. Is a place to go if you want to know the history of the places and people you visit. It won't take long and they have a good display.

A very nice and deserved tribute to the Frevo and Recife´s carnival. Near the Marco Zero, the surroundigs are full of history and nice places to visit. Try the first Sinagogue of the Américas a step away from the Paço.

On Rua da Guia, off Praça do Arsenal, is the building called 'Paço do Frevo', thus Palace of the Frevo. Outside the big town house, not really a palace, is written on an information board, that this was built in 1901 as office of the 'Western Telegraph Company', now defunct.
Now this building serves as a museum for the 'Frevo', that distinct musical and dance style of Pernambuco, especially connected to the well known carnival in Recife and Olinda.

Hi, I am planning to visit the Paço de Frevo, but I am wondering when the dance rehearsals are? Are there also dance classes where tourists can participate? Thank you very much, kind regards, Stefanie

Written August 15, 2016
