Since its very beginning, in 1636, this beautiful small street has been named and re-named many many times. Its first name was "Rua do Bode" (Goat Street, in English), then "Rua dos Judeus" (Street ot fhe Jews), "Rua da Cruz" (Street of the Cross"), "Rua dos Mercadores" (Street of the Merchants), and finally, in 1870, it got its actual name: "Rua do Bom Jesus" (Street of the Good Jesus). It has been, since the years of the Dutch rule in Colonial Brazil, an important street, with nice and colorful buildings. Here, archaeological excavations found the site of the very first synagogue of all the Americas: the recently restored "Kahar Zur Israel" (The Rock of Israel), which can be easily visited. If you are strolling along the "Recife Antigo" quarter, "Rua do Bom Jesus" is not far from the "Marco Zero" square and it is certainly a must-see. Restaurants and bars are displayed along the street and a handicraft market takes place there every Sunday. Taxis are recommended at all times. Enjoy!

When in Recife Antigo one must definitely walk from the Praça Rio Branco/Marco Zero to the Praça do Arsenal through the beautiful Rua do Bom Jesus with the old town houses painted in various colours. In the days of the Dutch mid-17th century several jews came here from Amsterdam. They opened shops mainly in this particular street, which was known for a long time as the 'Rua dos Judeus'. Till today exists here the oldest synagogue of the America's, the 'Sinagoga Kahal Zur Israel'.
On this street is also a bronze sculpture of Antonio Maria, a man from Recife, but who mostly lived in Rio de Janeiro, where he died at age 43 from a heart attack. In Brazil he is known as the 'Rei do Samba-cançao', having composed and written some of the most successful samba songs.
Carnival is very important in Pernambuco and on the Rua do Bom Jesus 183 can be found the 'Embaixada dos Munecos Gigantes', an exhibition of giant dolls from the 'Olinda Carnaval'.

Months before Carnaval this street and the adjacent area is hopping with activity of all sorts of groups practicing and showing off what they plan to present at Recife's unique Carnaval. It is also part of the historic Old City where you can see the 17 century Dutch and Portuguese influences. But, it is at Carnaval time that people line the street from end to end to observe exciting amateur groups perform in their "Blocos. All year round one can visit the amazing reconstruction of the first Jewish Synagogue in the New World. Nearby are some of the newest museums and gallerias.

The comments do justice to the beauty of the Street. It is as beautiful during the day as it is at night, with the lamps lit. Very original. There are crafts, culture centers and restaurants/bars. Lively place that makes you feel transported to the past. Wonderful.

It was once the most beautiful street in the world, but there's nothing special about it. The buildings are old and unkempt. The street was finished, besides being super short.

o aeroporto de Recife fica dentro da cidade, numa região central e de fácil acesso para outras regiões da cidade. indo direto do aeroporto, dependendo do horário (picos de rush) vc demora cerca de 20 min, já que o acesso será praticamento uma reta. para ser mais rápido deve seguir pela av. Mascarenhas de moraes e depois av. Sul será o caminho mais rápido. caso queira passear olhando o mar, vc devera seguir por boa viagem.
